Ramadan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ramadan or Ramadhan (Arabic: رمضان) is the ninth month of the Islamic year and the holiest month in Islam, however, it is normal month for non-Muslims that live in the countries that use the Islamic calendar.
Ramadan reaches its height in its last ten days, one of the last five odd numbered days of the month is called the Night of Destiny (Arabic: Laylat al-Qadr), marking the date of the revelations of the first verses of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad.
The fasting during Ramadan has been so predominant in defining the month that some have been led to believe the name of this month, Ramadan, is the name of Islamic fasting, which in reality is Sawm for fasting in general and "Islamic fasting during Ramadan" for the fasting of this particular month.
