Proselytism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Bible, the word proselyte denotes a person who has converted to the Jewish religion, without overtly negative overtones.
It generally describes attempts to convert a person from one point of view to another, usually in a religious context.
All humans have the right to have religious beliefs, and to change these beliefs, even repeatedly, if they so wish.

 The Freedom of Proselytization
The belief that proselytizing is necessary is inherent in universalizing religions including Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism.
Others might further argue that those who proselytize are intolerant of potentials and should not be allowed to continue with their "hate crimes." Many supporters of this argument would claim that one cannot objectively evaluate religions on the basis of truth and that being unable to judge means that all religions are equally true.
These religions are known as universalizing religions, and attempts to convert are referred to as proselytization.

He specifically rejected the role of proselytizer, but his celebrity presence served to spread his hopes for ecumenical peace and harmony.

Before the advent of mass teaching, proselytization campaigns were under the direction of one of the National Spiritual Assembly's sub-committees.
Such an insight becomes extremely significant in relationship to any discussion of Baha'i proselytization in India for the primary reason that until the beginning of the mass teaching era the manner in which Baha'u'llah was presented in the subcontinent was essentially rooted in this tradition.

The Pala rulers of Bengal were Buddhists and Buddhism, in spite of the damage caused to it by Bakhtiyar Khalji, remained prevalent in the land until at least the fourteenth century.

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about inter-religious conflicts fomented by the proselytizing activities of certain Christian and Islamic sects, who appear to be locked in a race to convert the entire world’s population into their respective monotheistic faiths.
We believe that the large majority of Muslims and Christians do not harbor such grand aspirations and are opposed to the proselytizing schemes of their organized religions.
We are troubled by the likelihood of major clashes of civilizations resulting from the exclusive truth claims of monotheistic religions.

Contrasting with the lack of research on Buddhist proselytization in China is a wealth of cultural artefacts which has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of medieval Chinese culture and the role of Buddhism in its development.
In contrast to extensive research in Western religions on the role of preaching in the development and spread of Abrahamic traditions, historians of religion have neglected the role of proselytization in the growth and transmission of Buddhism.

My reading of the history of early Christianity leads me to believe that the Western churches' obsession for converting others to Christianity is based more on their historical tradition of using proselytization as an instrument of statecraft for the extension of their political and mercantile influences, than in furthering the spiritual welfare of their flocks.
The theological beliefs of the original Indian orthodox churches along with their Egyptian, Armenian, Syrian and Ethiopian counterparts as well as the Greek and Russian orthodox churches (known as the Eastern Orthodox) seem to have survived in tact over a span of over 1600 years.
Such meddling in the internal affairs of the ancient church resulted in the formation of a proselytizing group called the CMS; which is now part of the Church of South India (CSI).
