It is a precept of the Church that women of the Church share the authority of the Priesthood with their husbands, actual or prospective; and therefore women, whether taking the endowment for themselves or for the dead, are not ordained to specific rank in the Priesthood.
It is not given to woman to exercise the authority of the Priesthood independently; nevertheless, in the sacred endowments associated with the ordinances pertaining to the House of the Lord, woman shares with man the blessings of the Priesthood.

However, the program aroused the misgivings of some conservative church leaders, so it was truncated and reconfigured in 1982.
As the American frontier began to close and new immigration laws were imposed by the U.S. government, the policy of the church was gradually reversed, and Mormon converts overseas were encouraged to remain and help build up the church in their own countries.
