Pagan Forum - Polytheism: Some Thoughts and Ideas
Polytheism also exhibits a healthy respect for human life, as well as the life of other beings, in that, while some gods can be fearsome and all should be respected, none of them demand that human worshippers give up their own identities and remake themselves in the image of deity.
Polytheism as embodied within the Neo-Pagan subculture has proven itself to be a powerful and vital family of religious traditions that need to dealt with on their own terms, and not on the terms of the detractors and naysayers who are full of prejudices.
In fact, it could be vigorously argued that polytheism is the crowning approach to the divine in that it allows for natural diversity and tolerance to occur....polytheistic faiths tend to thrive in social complexities, such as exist in today's post-modern urban world.

 The Origins of Biblical Monotheism
Ugaritic polytheism is expressed as a monism through the concepts of the divine council or assembly and in the divine family.
The Masoretic Text, evidently uncomfortable with the polytheism expressed in the phrase "according to the number of the divine sons," altered the reading to "according to the number of the children of Israel" (also thought to be seventy).
This religious outlook appears, for example, in Psalm 29:2, where the "sons of God" or really divine sons or children are called upon to worship Yahweh, the Divine King.

 FAITH and "THEOSIS"
Animism, polydemonism, polytheism, and the manipulation of magic are not threatened by the appearance of high gods, as we can see in monotheistic religions where many of these features in one way or other are still present, especially among the adherents, even if such presence is not officially condoned.
The latter arose against a background of polytheism of the ancient Near East, assimilating facets of both Judaism and Christianity, while Christianity emerged from the religion of Israel.
It might be tempting to explain the origin of monotheism by pointing to "founders" of world religions, such as Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, and Zoroaster, and claim that they affirmed so passionately the power of one god who does not tolerate any other gods, that monotheism emerged.

Integrational Polytheism is a form of polytheism where you believe in the existence of not several, but of all the gods ever described.

It has also been known as Eclectic Polytheism, but this article is in reference to the religion set down by Calum Carlyle (website listed below).

Polytheism really means to indicate that there is no one supreme God and that there are actually many Gods.
The point is, polytheism means that there is no one supreme God, just a host of gods whom sprout from the plane of undifferentiatied absolute spiritual existence.
However, since there is really only one "God" or supreme "God of gods" in the Vedic religion, there really is no "polytheism" in the Vedic culture.

 From Monotheism to Polytheism
There is a monotheism that precedes the polytheism of the Veda; and even in the invocation of the innumerable gods the remembrance of a God one and infinite, breaks through the mist of idolatrous phraseology like the blue sky that is hidden by passing clouds.
This raises an important point; namely, the possibility that polytheism never did arise by the evolution of polydemonism, but because the attributes of a single God were differently emphasized by different people until those people in later years came to forget that they were speaking of the same Person.
When the cuneiform literature first began to reveal its message, scholars of cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphics soon found themselves dealing with a tremendous number of gods and goddesses, and demons and other spiritual powers of a lesser sort, which seemed to be always at war with one another and much of the time highly destructive.

polytheism, belief in a plurality of gods in which each deity is distinguished by special functions.
The religion of dynastic Egypt included hundreds of deities, but worship (as in Greek Olympianism) tended to be city-centered; thus, Anubis, the jackal-headed god who guided the dead along the dangerous path to the underworld, had his cult at Abydos, and Ba, the ram-god, was worshiped at Bubastis.
All of these forms of belief are based on human propensity to worship all objects on earth and in heaven, all that is unusual or useful, strange or monstrous.

Monotheism, as reflected in the "all is-one" tenet, is a great way to escape the world as it really is. Polytheism, on the other hand, especially the type found in the North, is a spiritual system of facing the world as it is. It celebrates differences that are strengths.
Indeed, the gods of the North have evolved and are still evolving through their many limitations just as we hope we are.
Within the Northern spiritual path there are those who would argue with the above idea of polytheism, pointing out perhaps the many names which Odin calls himself by as an example of an "all-is-one" principle within the North.
