Philip the Apostle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philip was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.
Philip's authority was invoked by the Gnostics, who ascribed to the apostle a number of works; for example, a Gospel of Philip forms part of the Nag Hammadi library.
The Gospel of John states (1:43) that he was called by Jesus to be his follower; that he introduced Nathanael (sometimes identified with Bartholomew) to Jesus.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Philip the Apostle
The feast of the Apostle is celebrated in the Roman Church on 1 May (together with that of James the Younger), and in the Greek Church on 14 November.
The remains of the Philip who was interred in Hieropolis were later translated (as those of the Apostle) to Constantinople and thence to the church of the Dodici Apostoli in Rome.
Many modern historians believe that it was the deacon; it is, however, possible that the Apostle was buried there and that the deacon also lived and worked there and was there buried with three of his daughters and that the latter were afterwards erroneously regarded as the children of the Apostle.

Philip himself remained at S. Girolamo till 1583, and it was only in obedience to Gregory XIII that he then left his old home and came to live at the Vallicella.
Philip devoted his afternoons to men and boys, inviting them to informal meetings in his room, taking them to visit churches, interesting himself in their amusements, hallowing with his sweet influence every department of their lives.
Philip at once abandoned the idea of going abroad, and in the following year the informal meetings in his room developed into regular spiritual exercises in an oratory, which he built over the church.

Often the New Testament refers to these twelve apostles as "the disciples," but there is a distinction we need to keep in mind: disciples are learners and followers; apostles are disciples who have been given a particular commission.
Philip's home was Bethsaida ("Fishertown") on the Sea of Galilee, and he was a friend of Andrew who brought him to Christ (John 1:43).
Certainly the role of apostle was considered a spiritual gift in the Church at Corinth (1 Corinthians 12:28-29), and there is no indication that the gift would pass away.

Biography: Philip and James, Apostles (1 May NT)
Philip the Apostle appears in the Synoptic Gospels and in Acts only as a name on the list of the Twelve, but he appears in several incidents in the Gospel according to John.
This is one reason (not the only one) for regarding the Gospel of John as the testimony of an eyewitness.
However, it should be noted that the most natural understanding of "Judas of James" is "Judas son of James," and that there is therefore no reason to suppose that James the son of Alphaeus has a brother named Jude.
