Topic: Phanes

Greek Mythology: PHANES Protogenos God of Creation, Generation, Life ( also Thesis Protogenos )
Phanes in the Orphic tradition was the first king of the universe.
In these are recorded in one group all the oracles which the prophetic hand of Phanes first born engraved as ordained for the world, and drew with his pencil the house proper for each [the astronomical house or zodiac sign].
And the third god of the third triad this theology too celebrates as Protogonos (First-Born) [Phanes], and it calls him Zeus the order of all and of the whole world, wherefore he is also called Pan (All).

It was Chronus and Aether who became the parents of the first god, Phanes or Protogonus, who was usually identified with Eros (Love).

Hence too from the account of Phanes given by Proclus, it follows that what that divinity is in the intelligible, that Thetis must be in the sensible world.
Afterwards (says Syrianus) the first and secret genera of the Gods subsists, among which the first apparent is the king and father of the universe, whom on this account they call Phanes.

And Phanes reports of her that she is the most beautiful woman in the world, but of her coming thither, whence she came or when, she would tell him nothing.
Now, having taken Phanes, they were about to crown him on this wise, when there appeared among them a veiled woman, very tall and goodly, whom they conceive to be a goddess and worship.
Then she seemed to me to be jesting, like that scribe who told me of Krophi and Mophi; for Rhodopis lived in the days of King Amasis and of Sappho the minstrel, and was beloved by Charaxus, the brother of Sappho, wherefore Sappho reviled him in a song.

Phanes, whom in his present dress, none could imagine to be other than a Persian, mounted one of the horses still waiting before the gate; the stranger called after him, 'Farewell Gyges, farewell beloved Persian, a pleasant journey to thee, Gyges!' The servant, who had been waiting, followed on the other horse.
Phanes then put on the stranger's trousers, coat and girdle; on his own curls he placed the pointed Persian cap.
She heard him ask hurriedly after Croesus and his son; and then, from Melitta's answer, she gathered all that had passed the evening before, trembled for Phanes, felt so thankful to the generous Gyges, and again wondered who this youth in royal apparel could possibly be.

She has many similarities with the illuminating Dionysos Phanes of the Orphics, and Zoé was her earthly manifestation, sometimes called the lower (or 'moving' - living?) Sophia, or by the more ascetic Gnostics, 'Holy Spirit'.
Its basic tenets were that the material world was illusory and 'evil', behind which existed a real world of spirit from which we ultimately originated (their mythic representation of which being the ineffable Orphic God, Phanes (son of Chaos), dually manifest to us as Dionysos and Apollo).
Stars were, for them, spiritual essences entering the world, each star being a ray of Dionysos Phanes, the Being of Light, and the ultimate source and destiny of a reincarnating soul.
