Pelagianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pelagianism is a belief that original sin did not taint human nature (which, being created from God, was divine), and that mortal will is still capable of choosing good or evil without Divine aid.
Indeed, Pelagianism never vanished completely from the Christian history, acquiring always new variations and slightly doutrinary forms, shifting to parallel expressions of teachings, like the Semi-Pelagianism, quickened after centuries once again, during the breeding of 19th Century evangelical American revival movements and their defenders, with the theology exposed by Charles Finney, an ex-presbyterian preacher.
Jerome emerged as one of the chief critics of Pelagianism, because, according Jerome, Pelagius' view essentially denied the work of the Messiah; he personally preferring “teacher” or “master” to any epithet implying divine power.

The church fought Pelagianism from the time that Celestius was denied ordination in 411.
Pelagius challenged the very function of the church, claiming that the law as well as the gospel can lead one to heaven and that pagans had been able to enter heaven by virtue of their moral actions before the coming of Christ.

 PELAGIANISM, Pelagius
The Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D., again denounced Pelagian doctrine and it was banished in the Greek portion of the church.
Just like in the doctrines of Pelagianism and semi-Pelagianism, Arminianism proposes a belief that is not supported in scripture.
This gospel of salvation that resulted from the Pelagian belief was based on human works.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Pelagius and Pelagianism
Among the eighteen bishops of Italy who were exiled on account of their refusal to sign the papal decree, Julian, Bishop of Eclanum, a city of Apulia now deserted, was the first to protest against the "Tractoria" of Zosimus.
These clearly worded canons, which (except the last-named) afterwards came to be articles of faith binding on the universal Church, gave the death blow to Pelagianism; sooner or later it would bleed to death.
The assertion that every bishop of the world was obliged to confirm this circular by his own signature, cannot be proved, it is more probable that the bishops were required to transmit to Rome a written agreement; if a bishop refused to sign, he was deposed from his office and banished.

 Chapter 8
Pelagianism has as its central proposition that man's free-will is unimpaired, that no influence fetters or dominates his choice between good and evil, and that he has all the power he ever had, or needs to have, if he chooses to put it forth, to will and to do what is spiritually good.
Pelagianism sweeps the whole field of theological science, and urgently demands that all within that field shall be brought into harmony with itself.
The latter was of noble birth; and being a man of acknowledged ability, and possessing, moreover, the quick wit of his countrymen, he stood forth at the head of the sect as its facile princeps, and the most successful expounder of its peculiar tenets.

 Pelagius
To say that Pelagianism is heresy, is to stand in the broadest stream of the Western Church.
There is, however, an overwhelming consensus in the Western Church that the positions traditionally ascribed to Pelagius and certainly taught by his key followers are heretical and outside the pale of Christian orthodoxy (2).
For most of the ancient Church infant baptism was a given, since it was widely understood that it washed away original sin.

 What is Pelagianism and Semi-Pelagianism?
While Pelagianism says that human beings are not born with a natural inclination towards sin, the Bible says the opposite (Romans 3:10-18).
The same Scriptures that refute Pelagianism will also refute Semi-Pelagianism.
Romans 3:10-18 most definitely does not describe humanity as only being partially tainted by sin.

To the degree that human beings are seen as agents of their own salvation, the church loses its power, since the Gospel is "the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes" (Rom 1:16).
At its root, the Reformation was an attack on Pelagianism and its rising influence, as it choked out the life of Christ in the world.

Often identified as a monk but probably a layman, Pelagius was a biblical interpreter (he wrote a commentary on Paul's letters) and theologian who stressed the human ability to fulfill the commands of God.
In Rome he became the center of a largely aristocratic group whose aim was to pursue the most rigorous form of the religious life in contrast to the indifferent morality of other Christians.

In a series of treatises and church synods, both Augustine and Jerome sought to refute Pelagius until, finally, in AD 418 a church council declared him to be a heretic.
Pelagius left Rome, having lived there for many years, after it was sacked by the Visigoths in AD 410 and went first to North Africa, where he was confronted by Augustine, and then to Palestine, where he had the support of the bishop of Jerusalem to preach his doctrine.
But their doctrine was confounded by Germanus, who then led the newly baptized Britons in battle against the Saxons and Picts, defeating the startled enemy with shouts of Alleluia.

Pelagianism derives its name from Pelagius who lived in the 5th century A.D. and was a teacher in Rome, though he was British by birth.

It was because of the attacks of the Semi-Pelagians that Augustine was brought back once again to Scripture to study the Scriptural passages involved and to re-evaluate his work in the light of the Word of God.

Alexander on The Early History of Pelagianism provides a clear account of the doctrines of Pelagianism: for example, people become sinners by imitation not by generation; infants are born in the state in which Adam was before he sinned; temporal death is a necessity of nature, not a consequence of Adam's sin.
He argues that, contrary to the Pelagianism of the new evangelists, Calvinism teaches that the change secured in regeneration "is a moral one and takes place in a manner perfectly congruous to the nature of a rational and active being".
He concludes: "When sinners are thus represented as depending on themselves, God having done all He can, exhausted all His power in vain for their conversion, how they can be made to feel that they are in His hands, depending on His sovereign grace, we cannot conceive".
