Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Russia
From his early childhood Alexey Ridiger served in the church under the guidance of his spiritual father Archpriest Ioann Bogoyavlensky, later Bishop of Tallinn and Estonia (+1949); from 1944 to 1947 was senior subdeacon of Archbishop Pavel (Dmitrievsky) of Tallinn and Estonia (+1946) and later of Bishop Isidor.
His Holiness Patriarch Alexy pays great attention to the training of clergy for the Russian Orthodox Church, to the religious education of laymen and to the spiritual and moral education of the younger generation.
His Holiness Patriarchy Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia is the fifteenth Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church since the establishment of the Patriarchal office in Russia (1589).

 Wikinfo Russian Orthodox Church
The Church was originally a subsidiary of the Byzantine Orthodox Church, and the Byzantine patriarch appointed the metropolitan who governed the Russian Church.
This is seen by the leadership of the Russian church as a throwback to prior attempts by the Vatican to proselytize Russian Orthodox Church faithful to become Roman Catholic.
The Russian Orthodox Church ( Ру́сская Правосла́вная це́рковь) is that body of Christians who are united under the Patriarch of Moscow, who in turn is in communion with the other patriarchs of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

 MSN Encarta - Orthodox Church
The patriarchate of Alexandria ranks second among the ancient patriarchates and traces its origins to Saint Mark the Evangelist, who is believed to have been the first bishop in Africa.
His position is one of considerable moral authority, described as that of a bishop who is “a first among equals.” The other churches recognize his role in convening and preparing consultations and councils of Orthodox churches.
Unlike the pope, the patriarch does not possess administrative powers beyond his own territory, or patriarchate, and he does not claim infallibility.

 Russian London / Orthodox priests \'selling prayers\', claims Russia\'s Patriarch Alexey /
Patriarch Alexey said "vulgarity" had seeped into the flesh and blood of thousands of Church workers who collect money from the faithful in exchange for the lighting of candles in front of icons.
According to Patriarch Alexey II, head of the Russian Orthodox church, some priests have embraced Western-style capitalism with a little too much relish, and have gone as far as drawing up fixed-price lists for miscellaneous religious services such as christenings, blessings, confessions and prayers.
Ruthlessly suppressed by the Communists, the Orthodox Church is gradually reclaiming buildings and land confiscated by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

 Commentary Religious Liberty and Truth
While, on the face of it, it now seems "fair," after decades of persecution, for the government to give the Church an equal "playing-field" in the open marketplace of religious ideas, we must remember that the official Church under communism was often a conscious partner with the atheist state, cooperating in her own persecution.
This is the experience of the American separation of Church and State which, while today it seems to favor an agnostic approach to life, nonetheless does not give unfair advantage to any one religious group, church, or synagogue.
As one priest of the patriarchate has wisely put it: "We must find more Americans who are willing to work with us and who recognize the symbolic role that Russian Orthodoxy has played in this culture....But we also must find more Orthodox leaders who realize that we cannot return to the past.

Pope John Paul II has returned to the Orthodox Church relics of two revered fourth century saints, who were bishops of Constantinople and doctors of the Orthodox Church, in a highly significant gesture intended to bring Catholics and Orthodox Christians a step closer to unity.
John Paul II made some progress in relations with the Greek Orthodox Church on his historic visit to Athens in 2001, but the 62 bishops of the Greek Orthodox Synod in October rejected plans for a return visit to Rome by Archbishop Christodolous.
John Paul II and Bartholomew presided together over an ecumenical Liturgy of the Word, which mixed prayers, chanting and singing in Latin from the Catholic tradition with those in Greek from the Orthodox.

In January 1995, at a meeting in Rome on the subject of rapprochement between Roman Catholics and Orthodox, a representative of the Moscow Patriarchate expressed his conviction that Orthodox and Roman Catholics are "two families, two Churches; [they] have everything in common: the sacraments, a hierarchy, spirituality, theology"-Russkaya Mysl, 9-15 February 1995.

VILNIUS, Lithuania (CWN) - Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexey II appeared to be making conciliatory gestures to the Catholic Church this weekend with an appearance at an ecumenical blessing ceremony in Lithuania and hints that he would like a future meeting with Pope John Paul.

In an interview with The Tablet, Patriarch Schwarz, who was elected the Church’s spiritual head in 2001, denied poor financial practices, and said the Church had reached a crisis.

However, what the Patriarch is doing by not attending the Imperial Royal Funeral is creating further hardships, spiritually, for those who truly love and even pray to the Tsar Martyr Nicholas II and his family.
This means that the Synod of Bishops of the Moscow Patriarchate will not attend either, as they have serious doubts that the bones being buried on July 17th are truly the bones or the Tsar and family.
No one, of course, wants to be disrespectful to the Patriarch or his Sacred Synod of Bishops in Russia, but this decision not to attend wounds many hearts and many souls.

How can ROCOR reconcile itself with the MP
Is it possible to distinguish the current patriarch, Alexey II, whose position is arguably due to Stalin, from the Russian Church as a whole?
For generations the Russian Orthodox Church did not have a ruling Patriarch.
