Topic: Parousia

Friends of the Nazarene - Is Jesus Present or yet to come
The parousia is to the Church and for the Church only.
Parousia - lit., "a presence," para, "with," and ousia, "being" (from eimi, "to be"), denotes both an "arrival" and a consequent "presence with." For instance, in a papyrus letter a lady speaks of the necessity of her parousia in a place in order to attend to matters relating to her property there.
Parousia is used to describe the presence of Christ with His disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration, 2 Pet.

 The Parousia
Irregardless, Pretribulationism uses "Parousia"' to describe the pretribulational rapture of the Church.
Pretribulationism states that the parousia is the "second coming of Christ for the Church," at which time Christians are glorified and removed to heaven during the seven-year Tribulation.
Because they use the word "parousia" to describe the gathering of the Jews in Matthew 24 to bring them into the millennial reign, then they have a problem becuase Jesus comes, gathers the remnant Jews, and is with them as He leads them into that reign on earth.

The Parousia - A Word Study
The Parousia of Jesus Christ is both His arrival and the manifestation of His "presence" to all mankind.
Parousia is a Greek word used 24 times in the New Testament to mean "coming, arrival, personal presence".
(Matthew 24:37-39 NKJV) "But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming (parousia) of the Son of Man be.

The Parousia of Jesus Christ - Rev. Charles Cooper
Angels are identified with the parousia of Christ (Mt. 24:31).
The debate concerning whether parousia emphasizes different arrivals of Christ for different purposes, or a singular arrival and the presence of Christ that is initiated by the rapture of the church and ending with the battle of Armageddon, forces a choice between one or the other for every passage where parousia occurs.
The prewrath position believes that there is only one future parousia of Christ and, using the word in the technical sense, it refers to Christ's coming in general, including both the snatching away of believers and the battle of Armageddon, thus removing the debate about which passages refer to which parousia.

The Cross & Parousia of Christ
From this perspective, Christ’s parousia (which means presence or arrival) is tied, not to an outward, physical, earthly appearance of some sort, but to the consummated coming or arrival of the New Covenant aeon in the end of the old aeon.
The cross and the parousia of Christ are in biblical eschatology what alpha and omega are in the Greek alphabet – the beginning and the end.
For this reason, we prefer the term "covenant eschatology" which describes the Bible as a book of covenants, from Adam to Jesus Christ, through whom we have the "everlasting covenant" (Heb.

Parousia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The study and use of the term parousia was revived in the late 19th century with the growth of preterism and the publishing of James Stuart Russell's book The Parousia, A Careful Look at the New Testament Doctrine of the Lord's Second Coming.
It was appropriated by Christians as a specialized term for Jesus' glorious appearance and subsequent presence on earth—primarily his final return at the end of the world, but also his return upon the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.
In the Greek language parousia means "appearance and subsequent presence with" and in the ancient Greco-Roman world it referred to official visits by royalty.

The Cross and the Parousia of Christ - Max R. King
Sub-titled, "the two dimensions of one age-changing eschaton," this thoroughly researched, scholarly work examines problems that have plagued the interpretation of Bible prophecy for centuries, then offers a compelling explanation: that the Resurrection was a first century event from the Cross to A.D. 70, which fulfilled the promises of God to Israel.
The sharp contrast between the postponement hermeneutic of Dispensationalism and the function of the Cross regarding the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel is brought out in Part II.
It is shown that the "problem of time" is rooted, not in Scripture, but in man's failure to recognize that N.T. eschatology pertained to the consummation of the O.T. aeon - a cross-determined eschaton that extended from the Cross to the A.D. 70 consummation (Mt 24).

There is, of course, a tremendous controversy in the eschatological world between the millennialists, who insist that the kingdom predicted by the Old Covenant prophets must be a restored nationalistic Israel, and the amillennial and postmillennial camp that insists the kingdom was established in the church and is a spiritual reality.
Paul confirmed that the parousia was associated with Jesus' claim to Deity.

The Systematic Relationship of Filioque and Parousia
Thus for Barth, the parousia consists of the single revelatory event of Jesus Christ made manifest in the three forms of Resur-rection, Pentecost, and Return; as such, the parousia is Jesus Christ yesterday (Resurrection), Jesus Christ today (Pentecost) and Jesus Christ tomorrow (Return).
Thus the Filioque is ontically prior to parousia in the sense that the Holy Spirit’s role in the parousia, particularly in his work as the mediator of Christ to the church, will be commensurate with what he has always been in his eternal proceeding from the Father and Son.
Upon reviewing Barth’s doctrines of Filioque and parousia as outlined in the Church Dogmatics respectively, it is certainly difficult to avoid the impression that the Holy Spirit serves the work of Christ in his parousia, especially in the christological interpretation of the “middle form,” Pentecost.

 PAROUSIA
The Greek word parousia, employed in Matthew 24:3,27,37, 39 for the "coming" of Christ at the end of the world, possibly referred to also in vs.29-31, and certainly so in 24:35 through 25:46, derives from pareimi, par + eimi, to be beside, present, to be come, or to have come; hence, coming, arrival, of advent.
Paul, Titus, and Stephanus were all persons of distinction in the New Testament church, as well as their presence (parousia) of the occasions referred to above being the result of having come, or, in the case of Philippians 1:26, the result of an anticipated visit.
In 2 Peter 1:16, "the coming [parousia] of our Lord Jesus Christ" could have reference to his first coming, whereas in 3:4 it has to refer to his coming at the end of the world, also called in 4:12 "the coming [parousia] of the day of God."

What is more important is that the symbolism of the Parousia is simply in the Jewish sources the symbolism of the coming of the Messiah (or of God in such schemes as have no Messiah).
In place of the long Parousia discourses in the Synoptists, we have, in the corresponding part of the Fourth Gospel, John 13-17, dealing not only with the future in general but concretely with Christ's coming and the Judgment.
And in connection with this evidence we find His use of the title Son of Man. From all this the doctrine of the Parousia follows immediately, even apart from the passages in which the regular apocalyptic symbolism is used.

Thus, the aim of the paraenesis is to urge the churches to be and remain appropriately prepared for the coming of Christ which results in either defeat and judgment or wedding and salvation, depending on people's relationship to Christ.
The problem which the paraenesis addresses is that many of the churches are no longer properly prepared for the parousia.

The Parousia and the First Resurrection
"Parousia" is the Greek word for "visible appearance," often translated as "coming." We can now know for certain that whenever the apostles use the term "parousia" in relation to Christ's coming, they are referring to the brilliant, visible, post-trib' Appearance.
The pre-tribbers argue that the Day of the LORD here must arrive before the 70th Week because the Parousia must occur by surprise..."as a thief." They therefore think that it's the Church which is slated to be taken by surprise.
But if this were true, then Jesus would not have given the Church signs of his Parousia, for signs are given that we might not be taken by surprise.

The presence of the Spirit and the authority given to the disciples is understood when one thinks of the event of the sacraments, which the priest performs in the Church, starting from Pentecost and afterward in the history of the Church.
Here it is not a matter of a "dose" of divine grace for some inspiration or extraordinary illumination, but a true, hypostatic parousia, as was the parousia of the Son, who was seen and heard and whose reality was not doubted.

There is evidence of this as early as Peter’s temple sermon, where he describes the Parousia as the heavenly high priest emerging from the Holy of holies to renew the creation (Acts 3.13-21).
This may reflect the differing emphases of Antioch and Alexandria, but it could also be a memory of the early Church describing the earthly life of Jesus in terms of the high priestly traditions of the temple.
The implication is that the blood of the goat being brought from the holy of holies was believed from the very earliest period to prefigure the Parousia and that the association of the Eucharist and the Day of Atonement was well known.

The Greek word "parousia" (pronounced pair-oo-see-ah) is a noun that means "a coming" or "a presence." As it is used in the New Testament, it can refer to any individual's coming or presence to a specific place or to be with specific people.
What did Jesus mean when He said, "this generation will not pass"?
For example, in 1 Corinthians 16:17, Paul writes of "the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus." In 2 Corinthians 7:6, Paul writes of "the coming of Titus." In Philippians 2:12, it is used to refer to Paul's presence.
