 Newsletter - 3/30/04 - Nirvana in Buddhism
Epithets of nirvana in Buddhism include "the free," "the immortal," and "the unconditioned." Nirvana is attainable in life, and the death of one who has attained it is termed parinirvana, or complete nirvana.
As with Hindu nirvana, souls that have achieved parinirvana are free of the cycle of reincarnation.
The Theravada school of Buddhism was the first one to emerge after the Buddha's parinirvana (Death).

 Understanding Islam
Parinirvana is the ceasing of the physical form of the historical Buddha.
Vesak Day is the day that Buddhists throughout the world celebrate the birth, Awakening and pariNirvana of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni.
so the Parinirvana is the day when the historical Buddha Shakyamuni's physical form ceased to appear in our world system.

 Final Questions of Ananda
This is as [ordained] at the time of the Buddha's Parinirvana.
This phrase shall also be spoken at the beginning of the scriptures of all of the buddhas of the future.
All of the Buddhas of the present, at the very end, at the time of their Parinirvana,-- they too instruct that this phrase should be spoken.

The parinirvana of Gautama Buddha is depicted in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra.
In Buddhism, parinirvana (Sanskrit -- Pali: Parinibbana -- Chinese: 般涅槃; Pinyin: bō niè pán) is the final nirvana, traditionally understood to be within reach only upon the death of someone who attained complete enlightenment.
It is the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice and implies a release from the cycle of deaths and rebirths as well as the dissolution of all mental aggregates (form, feeling, perception, mental fabrications and consciousness).

Pudgalavada Buddhist Philosophy [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The Parinirvana of the Buddha will then be his transition from a local existence supported by the aggregates to a non-local state which is unfathomable.
A canonical text of the Mahayana explicitly describes the non-local form of the Buddha after his death as his “eternal body,” which is said to be like the fire that has not gone north, south, east or west, but is simply extinct.
Nirvana must be quiescence in the sense in which it is the “cessation of suffering,” not as a state that arises at the moment of enlightenment and is completed at death, but as an already existing reality whose attainment puts an end to suffering and the coming and going of Samsara.

Buddhist Scriptures: First Rehearsal of the Tipitaka
After the Final Extinction (Parinirvana) of the Buddha, and the cremation of his body, the community of monks chose five hundred Arahants ('worthy ones', 'perfected ones') to work together to compile the doctrine and the discipline, in order to prevent the true doctrine from being submerged in false doctrines.
The First Rehearsal is recorded to have taken place during the rainy season of the first year after the parinirvana, the latter event being the era from which the Buddhists have reckoned their chronology.
We have naturally ignored them in investigating the teaching of the Buddha, but they are of much interest in themselves, as literature, and in connection with the popularisation of Buddhism in the centuries following the parinirvana when in fact many of them were composed.

Tashi Deleg! - The Padma Samye Ling Monthly Bulletin
These successors, starting with Kasyapa, carried and propagated the exact teachings as spoken by Lord Buddha; they are the root and foundation of Buddhism and the cause of its development.
In holding with this view we are featuring the biographies of the seven great patriarchs who carried on the Buddha's Teachings immediately after his parinirvana, the first step in the preservation of an immense collection of doctrines.
At his parinirvana he left no remainders, and reached the ultimate enlightenment.

 Rev. Doami's February 2005
Technically, the latter event is called “parinirvana,” or complete extinction, because nirvana, when used to mean enlightenment in this live body, refers to the extinction, or blowing out the fires, of bonno, or insatiable desire, which is the cause of our suffering.

BBC - Religion & Ethics - Parinirvana Day
Buddhists celebrate Parinirvana Day by meditating or by going to Buddhist temples or monasteries.
The Paranibbana Sutta describes the Buddha's last days, and passages from it are often read on Parinirvana Day.
As with other Buddhist festivals, celebrations vary throughout the world.

Where nirvana means enlightenment, parinirvana means the superior and perfect enlightenment, which refers to the death of Buddha.
This chapter is Dogen's interpretation of the Buddha's final teachings before his parinirvana.

 Parinirvana Day
The dates of Buddhist festivals and the way they are celebrated vary from country to country, and between Buddhist traditions.
Parinirvana Day: Holy days and Festivals in Buddhism
Buddhists celebrate the death of the Buddha, because they believe that having attained Enlightenment he achieved freedom from physical existence and its sufferings.

The Buddha's last days are described in the Pali text called the Great Parinirvana Sutra (Parinirvana meaning "completed nirvana").

Stupas and Prayer Wheels - Pagan
The name “Parinirvana” comes from the word for when Buddha passed from this world.
This particular style of stupa is one of the eight forms built by Tibetan Buddhists and is sometimes also called a Dharmaraja Ashoka Stupa.
They see the stupa as dharmakaya which means “the body of the doctrine.” The stupa is considered to be a living embodiment of Buddha’s teachings and looking at or meditating on the monument or building itself is able to help the observer move towards nirvana.

 Great Parinirvana Sutra
To meet with the birth of a Buddha and have faith in the Dharma one hears [from him] is again difficult.
In that land there is a Buddha called Shakyamuni, a Tathagata, an Arhat, a completely and perfectly Enlightened One, who is perfect in wisdom and conduct, well gone, a knower of the world, unsurpassed, a tamer of men, a teacher of men and gods, and a World Honored One.
It must be a portent to all in the ten directions that his parinirvana is at hand.

 Understanding Buddist symbols and rituals
Before the Buddha’s parinirvana, He speaks of 4 holy places worthy of Buddhist pilgrimage, which are:
Below is a diagram depicting a schematic summary of Buddhist Symbolism (more prevalent after the Buddha’s Parinirvana).
Ananda then suggested to plant a bodhi tree as a gateway to the Jetavana Monastery and the Buddha gave His consent, saying "…and that shall be as it were an abiding place for me."

The Life of Buddha and the Art of Narration in Buddhist Thangka Paintings
The image of the dying Buddha is not supposed to evoke sadness as much as a feeling that all beings have the potential to become enlightened and attain release from the sufferings which characterize samsara.
His serene, composed, and restful demeanor (he is actually slightly smiling) is meant to communicate his attainment of the highest state of Indian meditation, that of a deep, quiet and blissful sleep known in Sanskrit as 'turiya.' This is precisely the reason why 'Parinirvana' is thought of as the 'final' or 'highest' nirvana.
Towards midnight of the same day, the event known in Buddhist terminology as the Parinirvana, or "Final Nirvana," took place.

 Buddha
The events leading up to his, birth, enlightenment and parinirvana, are told in twelve acts of Buddha.
The Buddha went off to meditate under a tree laying on his right side, in the lion position, he passed into Parinirvana.
There he gave teachings and told the assembly to ask what ever questions they had now.

Religious cults and sects - Zen
Like all Buddhists, the ultimate goal of a Zen Buddhist is to reach parinirvana (extinction), but unlike other Buddhists, the immediate goal of the Zen Buddhist is to experience satori.
Through the continued practice of meditation, Zen Buddhists can experience satori many times, each bringing them into deepening levels of self-awareness.

 Buddha's Enlightenment day
The Buddha's birth and passing away (parinirvana) are also celebrated on this day.
In the Tibetan calendar (which is a lunar calendar) the Buddha's Enlightenment and parinirvana will be celebrated on the full-moon of Thursday 3rd June this year.
We shall be holding our Annual Sangha Celebration on Saturday and Sunday (May 29th and 30th) thinking of it as a celebration of the Buddha's birth, Enlightenment and parinirvana as well as a celebration of our Sangha and of the mutual support we get from practising together as a community.

 Zenshuji Classes-Dr. Kato's Lecture Series
Interestingly, the Lankavatara Sutra cited the Buddha's last utterances differently as, "From the time of my enlightenment to the time of my parinirvana, I have not uttered a word." This may mean that the Dharma cannot be spoken by words and that letters cannot describe the actual experience of his enlightenment.
I shall soon enter into parinirvana (death)." These are words spoken by the Buddha that appear in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra.
It may also mean that he couldn't help everyone on the earth to attain nirvana.

 Nirvana
The ultimate goal of Buddhism is realization of nirvana; what happens to a man after his parinirvana cannot be explained, as it is outside of all conceivable experience.
As a negation of (i.e., the whole phenomenal world), nirvana is impossible to define directly; it can only be experienced or realized.
When a person who has realized nirvana dies, his death is referred as his parinirvana, his fully passing away, as his life was his last link to the cycle of death and rebirth (samsara), and he will not be reborn again.

Notice how this is in harmony with all of the above definitions of a bodhisattva.
Then it became a person who sought enlightenment for himself and others outside of the monastic life.
If Sukhavati is Parinirvana, however, and bodhisattvas are able to be reborn there then a bodhisattva cannot refuse to enter Parinirvana.

Know that such a place is indeed a seat for enlightenment: in such places Buddhas find Complete and Perfect Enlightenment, in such places Buddhas turn the Wheel of the Dharma, in such places Buddhas enter parinirvana."
Then the World-honored One, desiring to proclaim the meaning of this once again, spoke thus in verse:
For this reason, after my parinirvana, you should wholeheartedly accept and hold to it, study and recite it, understand and expound it, write it down and make copies of it and, just as you preach it, so practice in accordance with it.

Yoshiaki Shimizu's Multiple Commemorations: The Vegetable Nehan of Ito Jakuchu
Frequently the artist of these devotional images chooses to use only certain symbols, or some of the imagery, or chooses to combine multiple events into a single image when representing the death of Buddha.
This freedom of interpretation revolves around the core story of the death of the Buddha and the mourning of his followers, but the actual depiction is variable and left to the artist.
To begin his argument, Shimizu provides ample background information on the tradition of Parinirvana (or Nehan) paintings, including their uses and the flexible tradition of iconographic symbolism employed in these paintings.
