Topic: Parable

 Encyclopedia: Parable
The Parables of Jesus are a collection of parables told by Jesus that embody much of his teaching and are recorded in the four Gospels.
Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, there are many beautiful examples of parable in the Old Testament, for instance the parable of the ewe-lamb told by Nathan in 2 Samuel 12:1—9, or that of the woman of Tekoah in 2 Samuel 9:1—13.
Parables are strongly favored in the expression of spiritual concepts.

from jesus to christ: jesus many faces: the parables
The parable of the Two Sons is spoken in the temple to religious leaders, the chief priests and the elders (Mt 21:23).
For example, God was often represented as a ruler, a judge, a parent, the owner of a vineyard or field; the people of Israel were depicted as servants, children, a vine or flock; the judgment was represented as a harvest or a reckoning; and God's reign as a feast or wedding.
The parables are generally regarded by scholars as among the sayings which we can confidently ascribe to the historical Jesus; they are, for the most part, authentic words of Jesus.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Parables
The parables of the New Testament refuse to be handled like Aesop's fables; they were intended from the first to shadow forth the "mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven", and their double purpose may be read in Matthew 13:10-18, where it is attributed to Christ Himself.
Moreover parables thus detached from a Christological significance would hang in the air and could claim no place in the teaching of the Son of God.
Another way would be to consider each parable as it relates to Christ himself, to the Church as His spiritual body, to the individual as putting on Christ.

 World Religions: Comparative Analysis
Most of you know the Parable of the Prodigal Son as it appears in Luke's gospel, but probably few are aware that it has a Buddhist parallel in one of the major writings of Mahayana Buddhism.
Thus the Parable of the Prodigal Son reveals both God's love for those who were ready to accept it (the prodigal son who returns to his father), and His rejection of the Pharisees' hypocrisy and self-centered righteousness (the older son in the parable).
As the son in the parable shouldn't be satisfied by his lower status, the Buddhist disciples should also aspire to a higher position, that of becoming a bodhisattva.

Bibliography: See W. Kissinger, The Parables of Jesus (1979); R. Funk, Parables and Presence (1982); J. Marcus, The Mystery of the Kingdom of God (1986).
As used in the Gospels, the “parable” not only denotes metaphors, analogies, and enigmatic statements, but also short illustrative narratives.
In Jesus' parables, the speaker compares an observable, natural, or human phenomenon to the Kingdom (i.e.

To the former it is presented in parables and the truth remains hidden; for the latter the parable is interpreted and the mystery is partially revealed because of their faith; see the notes on Matthew 13:11 and Matthew 13:13.
The use of parables is typical of Jesus' enigmatic method of teaching the crowds (Mark 4:2-9, 12) as compared with the interpretation of the parables he gives to his disciples (Mark 4:10-25, 33-34) to each group according to its capacity to understand (Mark 4:9-11).
Thus both the present and the future action of God, from the initiation to the fulfillment of the kingdom, is presented through this and other parables (Mark 4:26-29, 30-32).

 Parable (WebBible Encyclopedia) - ChristianAnswers.Net
The fourth Gospel contains no parable properly so called, although the illustration of the good shepherd (John 10:1-16) has all the essential features of a parable.
He himself explains his reasons for this in his answer to the inquiry of the disciples, "Why speakest thou to them in parables?" (Matt.

The Parable of The Mustard Seed
This parable is a further development of the characteristics of the present spiritual kingdom of God.
In the parable of the mustard seed the Lord used the seed to make a point, and that was to illustrate something which develops rapidly from small beginnings, namely the kingdom of heaven, or the faith of an individual.
The word "parable," by derivation means "putting things side by side," and is similar to the word "allegory," which by derivation means "saying things in a different way." The object of teaching by parables and allegories is the same.

 USCCB - NAB - Matthew 13
Those who maintain a sharp distinction between parable and allegory insist that a parable has only one point of comparison, and that while parables were characteristic of Jesus' teaching, to see allegorical details in them is to introduce meanings that go beyond their original intention and even falsify it.
The point of the parable is that, in spite of some failure because of opposition and indifference, the message of Jesus about the coming of the kingdom will have enormous success.
The second and third types particularly are explained in such a way as to support the view held by many scholars that the explanation derives not from Jesus but from early Christian reflection upon apostasy from the faith that was the consequence of persecution and worldliness respectively.

 Honor Restored
Scott claims that the implicit referent for the parable is the Kingdom of God, and he further suggests that there is a sense of justice normally implied in the symbol kingdom.
Some scholars believe that the parable ends at 16:7, and that the kurioV who commends the unjust steward in 16:8a is not the "master" of the story but Jesus.
[3] Moreover, most scholars seem to agree that the interpretation(s) which follow the parable in 16:8b-13 are either only tangentially related to the parable or they represent misinterpretations of a parable told by Jesus by the author of the gospel.

The Parables of Jesus; How to study a parable.
Although it has been popular to allegorize the details of parables for centuries, Jesus' own example of interpreting a parable (The Parable of the Sower) in Matthew 13 demonstrates that He is making a specific point in the parable.
Each parable has a number of details that have a spiritual significance of their own, but all of these details also relate to the one spiritual message;
Therefore, "A parable is a brief story that is true to life, comparing the point of commonality between two unlike things, given for the purpose of teaching spiritual truth."
