Papal bull - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Papal bulls were originally issued by the pope for many kinds of communication of a public nature, but after the 15th century, only for the more formal or solemn of occasions.
Original papal bull's exist in quantity only after the 11th century onward when the transition from fragile papyrus to the more durable parchment was made.
Today, the bull is the only written communication in which the pope will address himself as episcopus servus servorum Dei, meaning "Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God." For instance, Benedict XVI, when he issues a decree in bull form, will begin the document with Benedictus, Episcopus, Servus Servorum Dei.

Pope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Therefore, such definitions of the Roman pontiff are of themselves, and not by the consent of the church, irreformable.
Contrary to popular belief, it is the pope's ecclesiastical jurisdiction (the Holy See) and not his secular jurisdiction (Vatican City) which conducts international relations; for hundreds of years, the Pope's court (the Roman Curia) has functioned as the government of the Catholic Church.
Some non-Catholic Christian communities, such as the Assyrian Church of the East, the Oriental Orthodox Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion, accept the doctrine of Apostolic Succession, and therefore accept (to varying extents) the papal claims to primacy of honour.

Papal States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Papal States comprised those territories over which the Pope was the ruler in a civil as well as a spiritual sense before 1870.
When in the fifth century the Italian peninsula passed under the control of first Odoacer and then the Ostrogoths, the church organization in Italy, and the bishop of Rome as its head, submitted to their sovereign authority while beginning to assert spiritual supremacy.
The Roman Catholic Church spent its first three centuries as an outlawed organization and was thus unable to hold or transfer property.

Rejection of Pascal's Wager: The Myth of Papal Infallibility
Papal infallibility is the idea that the pope is infallible, that is, he is unable to err in teaching revealed truth.
Many lay Catholics are under the impression that this is an old doctrine of the church which must be pretty well proven for their church to use as one of the main tenets of their faith.
Even the limited definition of papal infallibility to ex-cathedra [a] pronouncements on faith and morals can be shown to be inconsistent with the historical evidence.

 THE PAPAL ORDERS
The Grand Cross, the highest Papal award given to lay men and women, is also given to Ambassadors accredited to the Holy See after two years in post, and to leading Catholics in the wider world for particular services, mainly in the international field and particularly for outstanding deeds for Church and society.
It is customary, however, for them to be invited to participate in major events of their diocese, such as the consecration of Bishops, the ordination of Priests, and the introduction of a new Bishop into his diocese.
Like all the Papal Orders, it was reformed in 1905, and is given for conspicuous service to the Church and society, regardless of religious allegiance.

 Papal Infallibility
The dissenters, holding the General Councils of the Church infallible, were unwilling to accept the dogma of Papal Infallibility.
Regarding papal infallibility the present-day Roman Catholic Church says...
To the mind of the general reader, mention of the Vatican Council will usually recall two facts: that it was the occasion of the definition of the doctrine popularly called Papal Infallibility, and that many of the bishops present were opposed to the definition.

 Papal Tiara
Though not currently used as part of papal regalia, the continuing symbolism of the papal tiara is reflected in its use on the flag and coats of arms of the Holy See and the Vatican.
One common controversy surrounding the papal tiara, particularly coming from Seventh-Day Adventists and other Protestants, involves the claim that the words Vicarius Filii Dei (Vicar of the Son of God) exist on the side of one of the tiaras.
The continuing symbolism of the tiara can be seen in the decision of one self-proclaimed "Pope Gregory XVII", Clemente Domínguez y Gómez of the Palmarian Catholic Church, who believed that he was the rightful successor of Pope Paul VI, to be crowned with his own tiara in a ceremony in Spain in 1978.

 Papal Infallibility
The rejection of papal infallibility by "Bible Christians" stems from their view of the Church.
The Catholic Church’s teaching on papal infallibility is one which is generally misunderstood by those outside the Church.
It is a different story with "Bible Christians." For them papal infallibility often seems a muddle because their idea of what it encompasses is often incorrect.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Papal Regesta
Besides the regular Regesta of the papal letters made in the papal chancery, there were similar Regesta of the papal letters executed since the fourteenth century in the Apostolic Camera.
Rufinum", III, xx), St. Jerome refers to the archives (chartarium) of the Roman Church, where the letter of Pope Anastasius (399-401) on the controversy over the doctrines of Origen was preserved.
Thus Pope Zosimus in his letter of 22 Sept., 417, to the bishops of Africa refers to the fact that all the earlier negotiations with Coelestius had been examined at Rome (Coustant, "Epist.

 Library Index
In his General Audience of 8 September 1982, the Holy Father continued his exposition of the fifth chapter of Ephesians, focusing on the meaning of the word "mystery," as it applies to God's plan, its revelation in Christ, Christ's relationship to the Church, and the sacraments of the Church.
At Mass in the morning on 20 April 2000, Holy Thursday, when holy oils for the year are consecrated, the Holy Father spoke on the priesthood of Christ, the common priesthood of the faithful, and the priesthood of the ordained ministry.
In his General Audience of 28 April 1982, the Holy Father continued his catechesis on Theology of the Body by further explaining continence for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven as the particular response of virginity/celibacy to the self-gift of the divine Spouse in the Paschal and Eucharistic Mystery.

 Papal Claims to Authority
"As to papal authority, the Pope is as it were God on earth, Sole sovereign of all the faithful of Christ, chief king of kings, having a plentitude of unbroken power, entrusted by the omnipotent God to govern the earthly and heavenly kingdoms."
The Catholic Church appeals to this same verse to say that Peter is the foundation of the Church, and that his Papal office is declared here.
In the place of the Gospel message, the Catholic Church claims a blanket infallible Papal authority to proclaim Tradition.

 :::::The Papal Inquisition:::::
It was against this backdrop that Pope Gregory IX instituted the Papal Inquisition in 1227/31.
The answer, though, is rather clear — the former groups submitted to the authority of the Church, while the latter groups ultimately rejected the authority of pope and clergy.
The most famous victim of the reconstituted Papal Inquisition, though, would come in the 17th century.

 Papal History
Papal infallibility is one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented doctrines of the Catholic Church.
In this topic I will cover both biographies of the men who have been Roman Catholicism's highest bishop, as well as institutional and organizational changes within the office itself.

Papal Transition: On papal conclave & election of the next pope by Thomas J. Reese, S.J.
This followed the pattern of other dioceses where the clergy elected the bishop.
Epiphanius asserted that Clement gave up the pontificate to Linus for the sake of peace and became pope again after the death of Cletus.
John Paul II sees the papacy not just as a job but as a vocation or mission from God.

 Analysis: Papal deeds speak louder
It was difficult to avoid the impression that the pope was recognizing some kind of brotherhood in holy orders for the Lutheran and Anglican prelates that official Catholic theology would struggle to explain.
Since even his “ordinary magisterium,” or regular teaching expressed in audiences and letters, is considered to enjoy a divine seal of approval, popes feel compelled to sweat over every phrase.
Those talks were paralyzed by accusations of proselytism against Catholics in Orthodox nations, debates over Eastern churches in communion with Rome, and most notoriously, differing views of the limits of papal power.

Vatican Orders of Knighthood and the Catholic Orders of Chivalry
The first of these, the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, is in the unique position of having had Cardinal Protectors appointed directly by the Holy See until the "temporary suspension" of this post in 1924 (as of yet not reinstated).
The hereditary Grand Magistery is invested in the person of the Head of the House of Habsburg-Tuscany, presently HIRH Archduke Sigismond of Austria, who succeeded in 1994.
(3) Those Orders which were founded by Papal Bull, whose membership is limited exclusively to Roman Catholics, which require obligations of service according to Catholic teaching and which generally have a governing body which administers the Order on behalf of the Grand Master.

Pierian Press :: Papal Encyclicals Database: Introduction
The pope normally does not exercise his infallible teaching office through an encyclical, but Catholics are expected to accept its doctrinal content as an expression of the pope's ordinary teaching authority.
An encyclical was originally a circular letter passed on from one to another of the group addressed.
Note: * These features have not yet been added to the most recent ten encyclicals.

Papal contender has passion for poor
Hummes made short work of his prospects as a papal candidate, dismissing such speculation as “fantasy,” describing his retreat talks as a series of “humble spiritual reflections.” Two days before the exercises were to end, Hummes said he had not even spoken personally with the pope.
That has disappointed some who hoped for more fire in the belly from a bishop who once supported a metallurgists’ strike led by leftist activist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and who is a friend of fiery Dominican liberation theologian Frei Betto.
Finally, like Hume in his day, Hummes is the object of serious attention as a papal contender.

Amazon.com: Books: Papal Sin : Structures of Deceit
Garry Wills argues that the entire Church must follow Jesus who is Truth and be led by a Holy Spirit breathing the New Testament Greek grace of parrhesia: etymologically "pan-rhesia" or "speak all," i.e., "holding nothing back." For spiritual sins are vastly worse than bodily: lying more soul-killing than fornication.
To a devote Catholic who believes in the infallibility of the Pope, this book is likely blasphemous.

College of Cardinals - The Papal Conclave
New legislation regarding papal elections and church government during a vacancy of the Holy See was promulgated by Pope John Paul II on Feb.
Central to the full understanding of the conclave is the firm belief that the entire process of election is guided by the Holy Spirit.
This form of papal election began in 1274 and is considered the third period in the historical evolution of choosing the successor to St. Peter.

 Papal States
Papal States Pre-1849 For over a thousand years, the states of the church had been a unique religious enclave.
The population was nearly three million in 1846, of which only 15% lived in towns of a thousand or more.
The church provided the rationale for the existence of the state, to allow the pope freedom of action without owing loyalty to any secular prince.

Amazon.com: Books: White Smoke : A Novel of Papal Election
It's almost the author's fantasy scenario about extreme liberalism coming to dominance in the Catholic Church, right down to a Spanish Pope who wears business suits and who used to be a married husband and father.
This is one of those books that after you've read it, you can't tell if it was worth your time or not.
There is a reconciliation of a married couple on the outs, and a half-hearted aside into a secondary plotline about a man who wants to murder the next Pope.

 Papal Allocution April 29 1848
A papal Allocution of April 29 then came as a bombshell.
Charles Albert's insistence on “fusion” with Piedmont, and his refusal to discuss war aims with other Italian powers or to encourage their (and notably Pius IX's) interest in a loose Italian confederation, helped to bring about a general desertion of his cause.
For all his reforms, Pius had never seriously intended the liberalization of the Papal States.
