Topic: Pan-Atheism

 Encyclopedia: Atheism
Atheism, in its broadest sense, is characterized by an absence of belief in the existence of gods, thus contrasting with theism.
Weak atheism also called negative atheism or implicit atheism is the lack of belief in any god or gods, without a positive denial of the existence of any god or gods.

Buddhism: Is It Atheistic? Robert Webster (Reply) (12-99)
Some in the weak atheism camp distinguish between the absolute lack of a god belief and belief in what people sometimes call "Spinoza's God" (the impersonal "force" that is the universe; the "force" or "intelligence" that is or is in nature).
To some, atheism is the flat-out denial that any gods exist (strong atheism); to me, it is the simple lack of a god belief (weak atheism).
So, then, you may find yourself in a position where it would be useful for you to use the definition which relegates pantheism to the realm of atheism, and to call yourself an atheist.

 naturalistic pantheism
It is often maintained that the intent of such individuals in describing themselves as 'pantheist' is chiefly to identify themselves as adherents of a naturalistic spirituality by using an established religious term.
Critics regard this 'modern pantheism' as simply a more reverent and naturalistic form of atheism, since this unusual conception of God is seen as bending the traditional definition so far as to make it meaningless.
In answer to this objection, naturalistic pantheists maintain that the 'pan' prefix (meaning 'all') modifies the 'theism' suffix (meaning 'God') to such an extent that pantheism in fact has little to do with traditional theism.

One could be one kind of atheism and find SciPan to be compatible but one is a pantheist of the SciPan variation and atheist towards other religions supernatural gods.
Ted Drange doesn't believe in supernatural gods but he thought it reasonable to allow that our physical universe could be a god to pantheists and this makes that kind of pantheist into someone who is an atheist in relation towards supernatural gods but a theist in relation to the natural universe.
Isn't it more fruitful to take a calm and serious debate then with scientific pantheists instead of this constant harping and description of SciPan as being too "close to "spiritual atheism" or "spiritual humanism" to be called pantheism.

 Pantheism
Because it shares these naturalistic beliefs with atheism, the arguments for pantheism are the same as the arguments for atheism.
This form of pantheism is identical with movements variously called religious atheism, affirmative atheism, Monism, or Cosmism.
Many pantheists feel the word "God" is too loaded with these connotations and never use the word in their own practice - though they may use it to simplify, or to explain things to theists.

However, I sadly conclude, Howsepian uses the explosive charge of atheism against the Mormons because it is more conducive to his real aims than would be the much less eye-catching (but clearly more accurate) claim that Mormons are non-Anselmian theists.
The simple fact is that precious few of the conceptions of God or the gods entertained by human beings across time and cultures have been constructed with the help of St. Anselm's Proslogion.
