Jordan endorses new Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem
Amman-based church officials said the 62-year-old bishop, who was elected on Aug. 13 in two rounds of voting, held talks with Prime Minister Ali Abul Ragheb during which he was granted the official approval in accordance with the 1958 Jordanian Law on the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate.
On his election day, the patriarch, formerly a representative of Jerusalem's Church in Athens, said in a statement that he will serve the church and support the Palestinian people and their just issues.
The patriarch and the prime minister held a friendly conversation which was effective and in favour of the church and the Christian Orthodox denomination, he told The Jordan Times.

 CNEWA - Patriarchate of Jerusalem
However, the Jerusalem Patriarchate continues to take part in the activities of the World Council of Churches and the Middle East Council of Churches, and the late Patriarch Diodoros willingly signed joint statements with other local church leaders, especially in regard to the situation of Christians in the Holy Land.
The Patriarch stated that other Christians were using the dialogues as a means of proselytism, and that, since the Orthodox Church already possesses the fullness of Christian truth, it had no need to participate in such discussions.
The Jerusalem Patriarchate has also taken a rather negative stance towards the ecumenical movement: in 1989 it withdrew its delegates from all the bilateral theological dialogues in which the Orthodox Church is engaged.

 Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem
When the crusaders conquered the Holy Lands in 1099 AD, they appointed their own patriarch (the schism between the East Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches preceded in 1054 AD) but they weren’t able to abolish the Greek orthodox patriarch who stayed for safety reasons in Constantinople.
Thanks to roman emperor Constantine the Great and his mother St. Helena who builds churches all over Palestine, the Jerusalem Patriarchate gained its previous glory.
But there were always clergymen and faithful people who with big sacrifices and sufferings established the vested rights of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate.

Haaretz - Israel News - A Russian church s Via Dolorosa
More than 100 years ago, the Russian Orthodox Imperial Society built a kind of museum on the other side of the entry corridor to house the superb ancient objects that were found at the site, especially the holy threshold of the gate through which, a few scholars say, Jesus passed on his last way.
Grava was then at loggerheads with the leadership of the "Russian Orthodox Church outside of Russia." The dispute reached the courts and went to mediation, and Grava declared that in church matters he accepted the authority of the Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem - thus effectively denying the authority of the Russian Church.
The properties include land, buildings, churches and monasteries in Jaffa, on Mount Carmel, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, in Ein Kerem (the Jerusalem neighborhood believed to have been the birthplace of John the Baptist), Hebron, Jericho and, of course, Jerusalem.

Prayers For Peace from the Churches of Jerusalem
We, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of the Mother of Churches, living together with our congregation in the Holy Land, and awaiting the approaching feast of Christmas, experience deeply the mystery of love and mercifulness of God for our salvation through His incarnate Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem of Judea.
With the holy blessings of all the Church leaders of Jerusalem, let us renew and intensify our efforts in the year 2002 to end the suffering of our brothers and sisters living under occupation and work towards a comprehensive peace based on justice and security for all the peoples of the region.
For Jerusalem and all the land of your birth we ask a special blessing and we pray that all those who have the privilege of living there may remember that they are children of the one Father who wants each and everyone of them equally to be enabled to live life to the full.

In Mormonism, a patriarch is an office in the priesthood and is considered a prophet (but not necessarily a general authority).

NCC 2003 General Assembly: Reissue of Resolution Recognizing the Patriarch of Jerusalem
WHEREAS the venerable and ancient Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem is unable to function as a legal entity in Israel, and is thus unable to oversee properly the Holy Shrines and property under its jurisdiction and to operate the schools, hospitals and other institutions through which it serves Orthodox Christians in the Holy Land.
This means the Patriarchate -- legally responsible under Israeli law for many Christian Holy Sites along with schools, hospitals and other institutions -- is unable to exercise its responsibilities.
WHEREAS the General Assembly of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, meeting in November 2002, expressed serious concern about the ongoing failure of the Government of Israel to recognize the canonical election in August 2001 of His Beatitude Irenaios, the Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Then as today, most Orthodox Christians in Palestine spoke Arabic as their first language, and this systematic treatise on the Christian faith was likely published for their use and—at least ostensibly— not for proselytizing, as that was a capital offense.
