Omnipotence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In most monotheistic religions, God is described as omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnibenevolent.
Monotheistic religions generally attribute omnipotence only to God.
They note that the word "omnipotence" is absent entirely from the Hebrew Bible, even though the word Almighty is used, and appears only once in the Christian New Testatement, in Revelation, even though the various gospels make references of God's infinite power.

Omnipotence paradox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The definition of omnipotence varies amongst cultures and religions, and from one philosopher to another.
The philosopher Averroës advanced the omnipotence paradox for this reason (for which he was condemned by Bishop Tempier), although instead of phrasing it in terms of stones, he asked whether God could create a triangle with internal angles that did not add up to 180 degrees.
In Chapter 3, section IV, he notes that "omnipotence itself" could not exempt animal life from mortality, since change and death are defining attributes of such life.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Omnipotence
The omnipotence of God is a dogma of Catholic faith, contained in all the creeds and defined by various councils (cf.
It is sometimes objected that this aspect of omnipotence involves the contradiction that God cannot do all that He can do; but the argument is sophistical; it is no contradiction to assert that God can realize whatever is possible, but that no number of actualized possibilities exhausts His power.
The Greek and Latin Fathers unanimously teach the doctrine of Divine omnipotence.

omnipotence - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
Indirectly the omnipotence of God is implied in the effect ascribed to faith (Matthew 17:20 "Nothing shall be impossible unto you"; Mark 9:23 "All things are possible to him that believeth"), because faith puts the divine power at the disposal of the believer.
In the New Testament the great embodiment of this redemptive omnipotence is the resurrection of believers (Matthew 22:29; Mark 12:24) and specifically the resurrection of Christ (Romans 4:17,21,24; Ephesians 1:19); but it is evidenced in the whole process of redemption (Matthew 19:26; Mark 10:27; Romans 8:31; Ephesians 3:7,20; 1 Peter 1:5; Revelation 11:17).
On the other hand it is productlye of that specifically religious state of consciousness which Scripture calls "the fear of Yahweh." Omnipotence in God is that to which human faith addresses itself.

 WIBTW - Omnipotence
Since the traditional definition of omnipotence is incoherent, it would seem to be in the best interest of philosophical theology to abandon both this definition of God's omnipotence and the idea of his being infinite at all.
Although it is proper to speak of God as being temporally infinite, I believe the word infinite is usually used to speak of God as possessing infinite attributes.
I have suggested that the traditional definition of omnipotence is incoherent.

The Omnipotence of God and our Mission
The Catechism of the Catholic Church also teaches that the omnipotence of God is threefold: it is universal in its scope, it is loving and it is mysterious.
Although these others are undoubtedly attributes of God, the omnipotence is the one that can be said to be that is most fittingly designated as the object of our faith.
His love is faithful as is often repeated in the Old Testament, "his love endures forever." The prophet Jeremiah revealed this tender and faithful love of God in the words, "I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you" (Jer 31:3).

His argument against omnipotence refers to claims that God is not free to lie, to do something wicked or to break a promise.
A doctrine of absolute omnipotence, (Course Notes, p61) entails that an omnipotent God could have created any world within which the necessary truths of such a world may have been quite different to what we believe to be truths within the bounds of this world.

 Omnipotence
Hence, on the assumption that omnipotence is enduring for God, (14') is true only if God is not now omnipotent; that is, (14') by itself presupposes the condUsion of the argument.
For if God is already omnipotent, his being omnipotent is induded in the initial segment up to now, and that segment is not compatible with God's strongly actualizing T if omnipotence is enduring for God.
In particular, it does not follow from the assumption that God is not essentially omnipotent that (13) is false; it may be that, although omnipotence is not essential to God, it is nevertheless enduring for him.

 God's Omnipotence'
But such an argument cannot be used to prove God's omnipotence: The claim that God is omnipotent is not meant to include the idea that he can do what is logically impossible.
So, since this half of the argument concludes that an omnipotent being is not omnipotent (the conclusion that the opponent of omnipotence desires) by considering a case where God is asked to do the logically impossible--especially on the left-hand side of this argument --we can appeal to Aquinas' Thesis in rebuttal.
The left-hand side of this argument claims that God is not omnipotent because he cannot do the logically impossible.

 Omnipotence
If one is neutral about whether God exists, then omnipotence should not be assumed to be attributable only to the God of traditional Western theism or only to an essentially omnipotent being.
Thus, on the assumption that God exists, an accidentally omnipotent being is impossible.
On the assumption that God exists, he has necessary existence, is not temporally limited, and is essentially omnipotent.

Can God Create a Rock So Heavy He Can't Lift It? - Can God Truly Be Omnipotent?
Atheists claim that any answer to any of these questions means that God cannot be omnipotent and, therefore, the God of the Bible does not exist.
Contrary to their claims, omnipotence does not include the ability to do things that are, by definition, impossible.
The word "omnipotent" is never used in the Bible, but has been inferred primarily by one of God's Hebrew titles, "Shadday," which is most often translated "almighty."

 Is Omnipotence Logically Impossible?
The omnipotence of God has not been demonstrated to be a logical paradox; rather the argument against omnipotence itself has been demonstrated to rest on a logical absurdity.

This means that God is the most powerful being that can exist.

 Qualitative Omnipotence - S.L. Guthrie
My defensive view (for I am not proposing a new definition) suggests that if a being is omnipotent then she is capable of doing what is logically possible for her to do and, at the same time, is also producing those actions that promote an optimal or non-perturbing balance of moral good over evil.
Although many definitions offered for omnipotence focus on the number of acts possible for such a being to do, I think critics of divine omnipotence must consider this resolution to the two criticisms noted in the previous section.
Many well-meaning theists presume that to do anything logically possible is a sufficient guarantor of the attribute of divine omnipotence.

Quodlibet Online Journal: Impaled by the Two Horns of Logic: The Paradox of Omnipotence and Free Will - by Gabriel ...
In 1955, John Mackie, in his insightful article "Evil and Omnipotence," delivered a cogent version of the problem of evil claiming, "it can be shown, not that religious beliefs lack rational support, but that they are positively irrational...".
As Plantinga explains in his free will defense: "What the theist typically means when he says that God is omnipotent is not that there are no limits to God's power, but at most that there are no nonlogical limits to what He can do...".
Notice that Mackie has not demurred to free will conflicting with God's omnipotence because the theist has not placed any nonlogical limits on God's omnipotence.
