For female worshippers who wish to make ritual ablutions (wuduu') before prayers at the Omayyad Mosque, you will find that the womens' wash area is always disappointingly locked.
Instead, if you go out through the far right door on the mihraab (facing Mecca) side of the mosque and turn right, in the alley on the left the first door takes you into a women's restroom.
I found that the HOLE was a typical style of bathroom in Damascus, but some this one made some outdoor public restrooms look like a luxury!
