Old Style and New Style dates - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Britain and countries of the British Empire, Old Style or O.S. after a date means that the date is in the Julian calendar, in use in those countries until 1752; New Style or N.S. means that the date is in the Gregorian calendar, adopted on 14 September 1752 (New Style).
In Taiwan, even though new style dates are written in Chinese characters in very formal texts, it is now common to see Arabic numerals in new style dates in less formal texts.
For example the Battle of Agincourt is universally known to have been fought on 25 October 1415, which is Saint Crispin's Day.

Not all colonists used the 1731/2 form, and not all colonists used old style dates all the way up to 1752.
Many parts of the western world declined to accept the Gregorian Calendar, and the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches continued to use the so-called old style dates into the twentieth century.
To correct for the eleven minutes, the Gregorian Calendar does not have leap years for any of the century years (i.e., 1700, 1800, 1900 are not leap years) except for century years divisible by 400 (i.e., 1600, 2000, 2400 are leap years).

Old Style and New Style Dates
Communication between England and the Continent was thus prone to ambiguities as far as dates were concerned, due firstly to the difference of ten days (eleven after 1700), and secondly to the different start of the year.
Note that, whatever notation is used for the dual dating, it only has meaning in the period 1st January to 24th March each year (and of course for England and its colonies only before 1752).
If you see a date written as 2nd March 1735/6 you might think it means the year is uncertain even though the date is known.

All of the other Eastern churches that are not Orthodox churches, like the Coptic, Ethiopic, Nestorian, Jacobite, and Armenian, continue to use their own calendars, which usually result in fixed dates being celebrated in accordance with the Julian calendar.
All Eastern churches continue to use the Julian Easter with the sole exception of the Finnish Orthodox Church, which has adopted the Gregorian Easter.

Not all countries and people accepted this new calendar at the same time.
Some people also added 11 days to their birth dates (a fact which is not noted on their birth certificates).
Of course, this does not take into account the ten days the calendar was off, so the date is also sometimes written like 2 March 1692 / 12 March 1693.

The formal attempt to impart a good style is like the melancholy task of the teacher of gesture and oratory; some palpable faults are soon corrected; and, for the rest, a few conspicuous mannerisms, a few theatrical postures, not truly expressive, and a high tragical strut, are all that can be imparted.
