Nü Shu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although Nü Shu has existed for centuries, it was not known to the outside world until recently, with a report to the central government in 1983, due to the intense secrecy regarding the script.
At present no one living learned Nü Shu from her mother or sworn sisters, though there are a few scholars who learned it from the last of the women who did.
Until recently, women in Hunan were discouraged from learning Nan Shu "men's writing", that is, the Chinese written language.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Secluded from age 7 until death, "married out" into a husband's family, where they remained abject in stature and subservient to their husband's mother unless they had sons, women were isolated from anyone who cared about them personally.
The two girls, who are separated by thousands of miles and vastly different cultural assumptions, are brought together by a diviner, a kind of matchmaker who sees in Snow Flower and Lily the possibility of a laotong, a rare conjoining of two kindred souls that lasts a lifetime.
Through See's careful, detailed descriptions of life in a remote 19th-century Chinese village, we experience a world where women spend their days in upstairs chambers, kowtowing to elders, serving tea and communicating in nu shu.

To truly understand the nu shu women I needed to see what remained of their culture, walk the alleyways of their villages, and try to meet the last surviving original practitioner of the language.
During the last half of the twentieth century, nu shu nearly became extinct as the primary reasons that women used it disappeared.
That secret language is called nu shu —women's writing—and I first came across a brief mention of it when I wrote a review of Wang Ping's Aching for Beauty for the Los Angeles Times.

This seems especially so with Nu Shu - it was already an inherently exclusive language, and served as a sexual-cultural dividing line.
Studying their language preserves an important part of China's history, and also shines light on a movement that persisted simply because women wanted to say *something* and be heard by others.
If it were clearly a question of enabling or empowering people to continue with Nu Shu, I think we'd all agree - but how is it going to be 'retained' in practice?
