Revised Standard Version - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Testament was released in 1946, and the Old Testament in 1952.
In the New Testament, the RSV followed the latest available version of Nestle's Greek text whereas the ASV had used an earlier version of this text (though the differences were slight) and the KJV had used the Textus receptus.
Particularly criticised was the translation of Isaiah 7:14 as "a young woman" (the generally accepted meaning of the Hebrew) rather than the traditional Christian translation of "a virgin" (agreeing with the New Testament and the Septuagint).

Holy Bible Catholic Edition : The New Revised Standard Version: Current Amazon U.S.A. One-Edition Data
NRSV is the translation used by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, September 25, 2005
Where the Hebrew or Greek text cannot be properly rendered inclusively, and the NRSV translation still uses an inclusive rendering, it clearly marks in a footnote the correct version from the Hebrew or Greek that is a male rendering.
The NRSV is a fine translation of the Bible -- more literal than the New American Bible, with more up-to-date scholarship (although the forthcoming update to the NAB is supposed to be very good as well).

It is the hope and prayer of the translators that this version of the Bible may continue to hold a large place in congregational life and to speak to all readers, young and old alike, helping them to understand and believe and respond to its message.
This new version seeks to preserve all that is best in the English Bible as it has been known and used through the years.
The New Testament records the life and work of Jesus Christ, the one in whom "the Word became flesh," as well as describes the rise and spread of the early Christian Church.

Revised Version of the Bible was published around 1885 and was followed in the U.S. by the American Standard Version during the first years of the 20th century.
Precise language is vital, I think, when it comes to a version of the Bible as we've seen churches split, wars start and all manner of chaos through history as people have argued over what this passage or that passage actually means.
In fact, the New Revised Standeard Version has been widely accepted by United Methodist congregations throughout the U.S. Understanding the history of this version if fairly important for anyone seeking an accurate translation of the Holy Bible.

 Revised Standard Version (1946)
The New Testament was well received by American churches, including the evangelical ones; but the Old Testament (1952) provoked a storm of controversy, and killed the version's chances of becoming a generally accepted standard Bible in America.
For example, in Genesis 22:18 the RSV renders an ambiguous sentence as "by your descendents shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves" contrary to the interpretation given by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 3:8 and 3:16.
It is a curious study to check the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, a monument of higher critical scholarship, and note how every important Old Testament passage purporting to predict directly the coming of Christ has been altered so as to remove this possibility...

 The Revised Standard Version
The Apocrypha of the Old Testament, Revised Standard Version, was published in September of 1957, representing an important step toward a version of the Bible that would be acceptable to both Catholics and Protestants.
In 1870, Bishop Wilberforce of Winchester submitted a resolution to the Upper House of the Convocation of Canterbury that a committee be appointed to consider a revision of the Bible.
A committee was formed, representing the Church of England and nearly all of the evangelical bodies, including the Baptist, Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian.

HTC: Bishop's Pastoral Letter on the New Revised Standard Version
The prohibition of the use of the NRSV for bible study refers to Orthodox bible study, an activity where the Holy Truths of our Faith as they are revealed in the Holy Scriptures are studied by the Faithful with the guidance of a teacher ordained to the task.
Nevertheless, the members of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America, upon being acquainted with certain of its key passages and phraseologies, found it to be so divergent from the Holy Scriptures traditionally read aloud in the sacred services of the Church as to render it impossible of acceptance as Holy Scriptures.
Synodal Decision: At the 1990 Fall Session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America convened at the OCA Chancery, Oyster Bay Cove, New York, October 15-18, 1990, His Grace, Bishop Dmitri, presented an oral report on the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible (NRSV).

the NRSV was quickly adopted as a replacement of the RSV in the liberal denominations associated with the National Council of Churches.
In fact the most notorious verse of the RSV, Isaiah 7:14, in the NRSV is moved even further away from its connection with the New Testament.
Indeed, it may be wondered whether any considerable attention will given to it even within these churches, in which the exposition and study of the Bible has practically ceased.

HTC: An Orthodox Critique of Bible Translations
The NRSV is not an "inclusive-language" Bible in the common understanding of that term.
However, even though the NRSV was to be as "literal as possible" in relation to the ancient manuscripts (Hebrew O.T. and Greek N.T.), it sought to be "as free as necessary" in order to guarantee that the English meaning is the same as it was in these original languages.
The NRSV is the most recent revision in a family lineage of Bibles.

Amazon.com: Books: The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version with Apocrypha
The Revised Standard Version (RSV) is an updating of the King James Bible, removing the Victorian language and updating the translation (the English language HAD developed over the almost 400 years since the KJV had been written) to make the Bible more readily accessible and understandable for today's reader.
The NRSV is used by the Catholic Church in Canada for the Liturgy, and so all Canadians would find this Bible especially useful.
In addition, the softcover version contains a papal encyclical which speaks about the importance of the Bible and the serious study of it that Catholics should do (in direct contrast to the fallacious anti-Catholic claim that Catholics are told NOT to read the Bible).

The New Revised Standard Version: A Review
This reviewer can relate well to the announced NRSV standard: "as literal as possible, as free as necessary." For the Bible, the book on which we Christians seek to pattern our faith and conduct, it is important to be as close to the original as English allows.
The NRSV rendering of John 7:39 would be possible grammatically, but a contradiction of the rest of the Bible on the eternality of all the members of the Trinity:
Whether this version is ideal for personal Bible reading or not will depend largely on who is the reader, his (or her!) theological views (if any!), and other considerations.
