Topic: Nephite

 [No title]
Three principal events are common to both Nephite and Old World sources: (1) the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, King of Judah; (2) the birth of Christ; and (3) the death of Christ.
This would mean that because the crucifixion of Christ (presumably in early April) occurred in the first Nephite month, the Nephites probably shifted their calendar to begin the first month in April at the same time they began reckoning time from the birth of Christ.
This theory assumes that the third system of Nephite reckoning began on the very day of the birth of Christ, which is not explicitly stated in the Book of Mormon but is consistent with Sorenson's conclusions above.

 Alma 2
As the dominant religion, and one believing in social stratification, it is not a far stretch to see Nephite religion as persecuted, and relegated to the lowest and least empowered levels of society, if it were allowed to continue at all.
Their basic tenets of their belief system are antithetical to Nephite religion.
Note that at the time of the engagement, the majority of the Nephites had not yet emerged from the river (see verses 33 and 34).

 Helaman 5
Aminadab’s background in Nephite religion taught him the basic symbols and religious language and ideas, so he is able to interpret that they were speaking with angels.
As noted before, it is unlikely that all of the Nephites had left the land, and so this mission to the Lamanites was a mission to a different political unit, but quite likely to a number of people who had previously lived under Nephite rule and religion.
He has built up the Nephite understanding of religion and the atoning Messiah in earlier parts of his text, but now he is moving towards the New World mission of the atoning Messiah.

Tvedtnes, John A., "A Nephite Feast of Tabernacles" in Tinkling Cymbals (Provo: n.p.
A detailed model for the Nephite Calendar from the time of Lehi to Christ's appearance to the Nephites has been presented which is totally self-consistent with other dates published by this author for the departure of Lehi, the birth and death of Christ, and all internal Nephite dates of the Book of Mormon.
Thus, it was a rare day indeed, which is another witness both that we have found the correct day for his speech, that the Nephite year is correct, and that the Nephites indeed used the Hebrew calendar for their feasts.

Nephite ideas were changed forever (see Omni 1:12-19 and later books).
The Nephite world has its roots in the decay of ancient Israel in the sixth century BC.
(Note that the Nephites are referred to as "Christian" because of their heritage, but their behavior did not always reflect this (see Helaman 11:21 — the process began as early as Helaman 6:8).

Nephite army sizes coincided with general demographic growth: Armies numbered in the thousands in the first century B.C. and in the tens of thousands in the fourth century A.D. It appears that Book of Mormon military organization was aristocratic and dominated by a highly trained hereditary elite.
Wars and destructions were brought upon the Nephites because of the contentions, murderings, idolatry, whoredoms, and abominations "which were among themselves," while those who were "faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord were delivered at all times" from captivity, death, or unbelief (Alma 50:21-22).
Certain elements of the Israelite patterns of "holy war" were continued in the Book of Mormon, such as the important ancient idea that success in war was due fundamentally to the will of God and the righteousness of the people (Alma 2:28; 44:4-5; 50:21; 56:47; 57:36; 58:33; Morm.

Nephite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nephites, initially a righteous people, eventually fell into wickedness, and were utterly destroyed by their rivals the Lamanites circa A.D. Most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the Nephites were a historic people.
In the Book of Mormon, the Nephites are a people descended from or associated with Nephi, a prophet who traveled with his family from Jerusalem to the Western Hemisphere circa 600 B.C. at the urging of God.
However, most mainstream archeologists argue that there is currently no compelling evidence that this group existed.

More appealing to our view of the Nephites may be the fact that they tried to explain religious doctrines to the surrounding people, but Nephite view of religion required a tribal religion style approach.
Not that it didn’t, but perhaps not ever aspect of Nephite culture or tradition was equally divine.
This may be especially true if the heart of Nephite religion at this time was kept within a theocratic priest class.

Mormonism Research Ministry - Articles - Are Ancient Coins Mentioned in the Book of Mormon?
The reference to 'Nephite coinage' in the chapter heading to Alma 11 is not part of the original text, and is mistaken.
The introduction to Alma chapter 11 states that these are "Nephite coins and measures." This explanation comes to us via James Talmage, a Mormon apostle who was commissioned to add both chapter headings and footnotes to the Book of Mormon.
History shows that there was no coinage in the Western world during the supposed time of Nephites and Lamanites despite the fact that there should be if the Book of Mormon is an actual history of real people and real events.

 BOM--Ancient or Modern?
Rather than discrediting the Book of Mormon, the fact that the Nephite prophets quoted or paraphrased certain parts of the Bible is entirely consistent with the practices of the biblical writers.
This lack of knowledge about the ancient civilizations of the Americas undoubtedly explains the fact that for many years after the Book of Mormon was published, it was criticized for asserting that advanced cultures existed anciently in the New World.
All of this is to say that the mere existence of parallels between the Book of Mormon and this or that nineteenth-century source does not automatically impugn the Nephite record.

 Mosiah’s Legacy of Law:
Think about this: the teachings of those who upheld priestcrafts had terrible consequences for the church and Nephite society generally and yet the church bore it with patience, and the government did not stop those who did "preach according to their belief".
Mosiah told his people that their laws had also "been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord".
It is interesting to see how so much of the Book of Mormon dwells upon the period of Nephite self-government (92 BC to AD 29) and we might well ask ourselves 'Why?'.

Does Archaeology Support the Book of Mormon?
For instance, while the Book of Mormon makes it clear that the rival Nephite and Lamanite civilizations were centered near the "narrow neck" of land (understood to be somewhere in Central America), it says that they agreed to meet for their epic final battle at the "hill Cumorah" (Mormon 6:1-6).
Their conclusions are based on a number of major problems that arise when one attempts to apply Book of Mormon descriptions of travel times and population growth to the vast territories of North and South America.
Matheny noted that a 1983 Science magazine article describing barley found in a pre-Columbian setting is wrongly claimed as support for the Book of Mormon because the grain described was not a domesticated old world barley.

 Book of Mormon Populations
Such studies, as well as evidence from the Book of Mormon itself (see Scriptural References to Population Numbers), demonstrate that the Nephite and Jaredite populations were relatively small compared to modern populations.
But a total Nephite population of about a quarter million people, with armies in the tens of thousands, also sounds reasonable in light of our growing realization that demographic analysis seems often to suggest that descendants of Nephi's founding group may have been a relatively small population in a sea of other peoples."

Perhaps the origin of word "Nephites" is the Hebrew word NPILIM or NPLIM, which according to Young's Analytical Concordance is translated three times in the Bible as "giants".

The big problem, you see, is that the Nephite chronology counts 600 years from the accession of Zedekiah (598 or 597 BC) to the birth of Christ (dated between 6 BC and 1 BC).
At first I dismissed it as just another adventure in creative Mormon iconography, but lo and behold the author of the article also wrote the Encyclopedia of Mormonism entry on Book of Mormon Chronology (conveniently posted at his website) -- so I reached over and pulled it right off my bookshelf.
The Encyclopedia entry starts off with these two sentences: The Book of Mormon contains a chronology that is internally consistent over the thousand-year Nephite history.
