Abu 'Abd Allah ash-Shafi'i - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tradition says that he memorized al Qur’an at the age of seven; by ten, he had memorized the Muwatta of Imam Malik; he was a mufti (given authorization to issue fatwa) at the age of fifteen.
Among his teachers were Malik ibn Anas and Muhammad ibn al Hasan al Shaybani, whom he studied under in Madinah and Baghdad.
Among the followers of Imam Shafi’i’s school were many of Islam's greatest scholars, including the foremost scholars of hadith: Imam al Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Abu Dawud, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam Nasa’i, Imam Ibn Majah, Imam Bayhaqi, Imam al Hakim.

 About Imam An-Nawawi
The complete name of Imam Nawawi is Abu Zakaria Mohiuddin Yahya, son of Sharaf AnÄNawawi, son of Murry, son of Hassan, son of Hussain, son of Muhammad, son of Juma, son of Hazam.
Born in the village of Nawa in Southern Syria, Nawawi spent most of his life in Damascus where he lived in a simple manner, devoted to Allah, engaging single-mindedly in worship, study, writing and teaching various Islamic sciences.
Imam Nawawi was born at Nawa in the year 631 A.H. His father, a virtuous and pious man, resolved to arrange for proper and befitting education as he had discovered the symptoms of heavenly intelligence and wisdom in his promising child at an early stage.

 Introduction to Shafi'i Fiqh
The great scholar, hadith master, biographer, lexicologist, and saintly mystic Imam Nawawi is perhaps best known for his hadith books Riyadh al-Saliheen (The Gardens of the Righteous), Kitab al-Adhkar (Book of Remembrance), and his eighteen-volume Sharh Sahih Muslim (Commentary on the Sahih Muslim).
One of Imam Nawawi’s most accessible texts is Al-Maqasid: ma yajibu ma’rifatuhu min al-din (The Objectives, what is necessary to know of the religion).
But Imam Nawawi was also one of the foremost students and intellectual heirs of Imam al-Shafi’i, and his texts are referenced more often than the early works of Imam al-Shafi’i himself.

NAWAWI, SUBKI, & GHAZALI ON TA'WIL
Nawawi repeats in many places of his Sharh Sahih Muslim this un equivocal characterization of "the vast majority of the Salaf" or even "most or all of them" as people who applied figurative interpretation of the divine attributes in the Qur'an and the Sunna at the appropriate time and places.
The Ash`aris stood in the forefront of both battles, as shown by Imam Ghazali, whose eloquent positions against kalam did not preclude the fact that he, as Nawawi after him, interpreted Allah's attributes figuratively.
As Nawawi and Subki show in so many words, the reserve concerning ta'wil and the condemnation of kalam by Imam Ahmad was not because these were in themselves opposed to Qur'an and Sunna, but because they were being used out of place by the ignorant or by opponents of Ahl al- Sunna.
