Nalanda is important to the history of India, and that of Buddhism.
The famous Nalanda University had been established at the site by the 5th century BCE and the Buddha is believed to have visited it and given sermons near "the Mango Grove of Pavarika".
Nalanda literally means the place that confers the lotus.
