Myth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In saying that a myth is a sacred narrative, what is meant is that a myth is believed to be true by people who attach religious or spiritual significance to it.
In the academic fields of mythology, mythography, and folkloristics a myth is a sacred story concerning the origins of the world or how the world and the creatures in it came to have their present form.
Because of this usage, many people take offense when the religious narratives they believe to be true are called myths (see Religion and mythology for more information).

Use Ten Percent % of Brain Myth (Skeptical Inquirer March 1999)
Part of the reason for the long life of the myth is that if one variant can be proven incorrect, the person who held the belief can simply shift the reason for his belief to another basis, while the belief itself stays intact.
It is past time to put this myth to rest, although if it has survived at least a century so far, it will surely live on into the new millennium.
One reason this myth has endured is that it has been adopted by psychics and other paranormal pushers to explain psychic powers.

Great Moments in Science - Lemmings Suicide Myth
Indeed, this myth is now a metaphor for the behaviour of crowds of people who foolishly follow each other, lemming-like, regardless of the consequences.
One myth deeply entrenched in our language is that of the "Lemming Suicide Plunge" - where lemmings, apparently overcome by deep-rooted impulses, deliberately run over a cliff in their millions, to be dashed to their deaths on the rocks below, or to drown in the raging ocean.
So lemmings do have their regular wild fluctuations in population - and when the numbers are high, the lemmings do migrate.
