In Islam, Ishmael is known as the first-born son of Abraham (Ibrahim in Arabic) from his second wife Hagar, and an appointed Prophet of God.

Ishmael (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ishmael points out that the story was written by the Semites, and later adapted to work within Hebrew and Christian belief structures.
As they were driven further into the Arabian peninsula, the Semites became isolated from other herding cultures and, according to Ishmael, illustrated their plight through oral history, which was later adopted into the Hebrew book of Genesis.
Ishmael begins by telling the man that his life, which began in the wild, was spent mostly in a zoo and a menagerie, and since had been spent in the gazebo of the man that extricated him from physical captivity.

The focus on Ishmael's destiny to be the ancestor of a great people shows that one dimension of the story was ethnographic, i.e., it was designed to explain both the similarities and dissimilarities of two peoples who lived in proximity to one another.
Ishmael lived to the age of 127 (Gn 25:9, 17), another sign of God's approval.
In Galatians 4:29 Paul alludes to Genesis 21:9 when he remarks that "he who was born according to the flesh (Ishmael) persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit (Isaac)...." The Hebrew verb in Genesis 21:9 that Paul construes to mean "persecuted" does have both a positive and negative connotation.

It is clear that the claim of Islam about Mohammed coming from Ishmael progeny is farther from the truth than if I claimed that I came from the line of Julius Cesar who lived 2,000 years before my time.
Because Ishmael received no spiritual call from God, his only historical descendants were the twelve tribes which descended from his sons.
Islam also claims that Abraham and Ishmael founded the city of Mecca, but Mecca was not in existence prior to the 4th century A.D.  Ishmael
To understand why Abraham was "fictiously" being made the father of Ishmael and the Arabs, we must identify and understand the political situation which is in existence at the time Genesis was being composed.
It is my understanding that because Genesis' narrator had portrayed circumcision as a "unique mark" of God's covenant with Abraham and his descendants (Ge 17:11), that he accordingly made Arabic nations whom he believed to practice the same rite, Abraham's descendants.
If  it is physically impossible for Abraham to be the father of Ishmael and the Arabs, then why this portrayal on the narrator's part ?  The answer partially lies in dating the book of Genesis.

Next, Ishmael gives an answer to his first question, asserting that worship is "to do the will of God," and he declares that the will of God is to "do to my fellow man what I would have my fellow man to do to me" (57).
Ishmael reaons, "Queequeg is my fellow man," then states that what he would have Queequeg do for him is to unite with him in his particular form of worship (57).
Ishmael's joining Queequeg in worship, therefore, not only shows the intended universality of his religion, but the basic commitment to the self, to obeying the self rather than disobeying, and to tolerance and humanity, as Ishmael is one who seeks to please rather than to appall.

As Ishmael's dark half, Ahab is that element of the narrator's psyche most in need of purgation, and it is his self-destructive rage that frees Ishmael from the pathos that haunt him.
Ishmael also mirrors Brahma in his possession, for a moment at least, of four heads: "Here, now, are two great whales, laying their heads together; let us join them, and lay together our own," he declares, calling the reader to bear witness to a pair of whales lashed to the Pequod (Melville, Moby Dick 427).
Ishmael's narrative, then, may be seen as an attempt at defining the incomprehensible in comprehensible terms, and Melville's definition of the novel as a medium may be viewed similarly.
