Muawiyah I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mu'awiyah's father was Abu Sufiyan ibn Harb who was initially a bitter opponent of Muhammad.
Mu'awiyah did become a Muslim before the conquest of Mecca but hid his faith rather like Muhammad's uncle Abbas.
Because 'Ali did not apprehend and punish 'Uthman's murderers, Mu'awiyah regarded him as an accomplice to the murder and refused to acknowledge his caliphate.

WORLD ENCYCLOPAEDIA - Iraq - The Sunni-Shia Controversy
The ambitious Muawiyah induced Ali's eldest son, Hasan, to renounce his claim to the caliphate.
Muawiyah, a kinsman of Uthman and the governor of Syria, then refused to recognize Ali, and he demanded the right to avenge his relative's death.
At last it was announced that neither Ali nor Muawiyah should be caliph; Abd Allah, a son of Umar, was proposed.

 Umayyads
Uthman was succeeded by Ali, son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad and chief of the legitimist party, which believed that only a member of Muhammad's family could rightfully hold the caliphate.
Muawiyah had been the governor of Syria under the 3rd and 4th caliphs, Uthman ibn Affan and Ali Ben Abu Talib.
The Umayyads were an Islamic dynasty established by the caliph Muawiyah I (Mu'awiya) in 661.

Islamic and Muslim Sects Around the World - A Shi'ite Encyclopedia - Chapter 5a - More On Muawiyah
Muawiyah and his father Abu Sufyan were among those who fought the Prophet till last minutes and when they found that Mecca will be captured shortly and their turn is over, they decided to go under the guise of Islam to save their life and to destroy Islam from inside.
Similarly, Yazid Ibn Muawiyah, Ziyad, the son of his father, Ibn Marjanah, Marwan, al-Hajjaj, Ibn al-Aas, and others from the accursed tree mentioned in Qur'an, and who were cursed by the tongue of the Prophet (PBUHandHF), they became the commanders of the believers and the guardians of their affairs.
Muawiyah went forth against Ali as has preceded, and assumed the title of Caliph.

Muawiyah was also an enemy of Ali, blaming him for the death of Uthman.
Muawiyah reached an accord with Ali's first son, Hassan, who agreed to withdraw from politics.
When the mantle of leadership was to be passed to Muawiyah's son Yazid, he was challenged by Husain, Ali's second son.

An introduction to fourth infallible Hazrat Imam Hassan (AS): IT IS A PART OF ISLAMIC OCCASIONS NETWORK
Muawiyah should practice upon the Book of God (The Quran) and the Sunnah of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.).
Muawiyah had established a government and dominion in Syria and for years he had played tricks with cunning ways and means against Ali (A.S.).
Muawiyah sent all those letters to Imam (A.S.) along with a covering letter saying, "These people did not remain faithful to your father and they will not remain on your side either.

Umayyad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Later when Ali was assassinated in 661, his son Hasan pledged allegiance to Muawiyah and Muawiyah was declared caliph of all Muslim lands.
Since the killers of Uthman had allied themselves with Ali, Muawiyah refused to accept his caliphate, and in 657 led an army against him.
The two sides agreed to a conciliation procedure, resulting in an arbitration that many of Ali's partsans saw as unfair.

Above all, Muawiyah wanted to strengthen the basis of future kingdom of his son, Yazid, who because of his lack of principles and scruples was opposed with a large group of Muslims.
Therefore, in order to quell all opposition, Muawiyah had undertaken more severe means until he died in 60 AH and his son Yazid took his place.
The event of Karbala, the capture of women and children of the Household of Prophet, their being taken as prisoners from town to town, and the speeches made by Janab-e-Zainab, the daughter of Ali, who was one of the prisons, became a scandal for Umayyah Kingdom.

 Articles - Sunni Islam
Muawiyah claimed that because Ali had taken no action to apprehend Uthman's killers, Ali was complicit in his murder.
The Khawarij killed 'Ali as part of a string of assassination attempts that targeted 'Ali, Muawiyah, and Amr ibn al-As, Muawiya's governor of Egypt (Ali's assassin was the only one who succeeded).
Though most Sunnis acknowledge that 'Ali had the stronger claim in his dispute with Muawiyah, Sunni authorities usually refrain from questioning the sincerity of Muawiya's intentions and generally give him the benefit of the doubt.

Surah 17, verse 33.) In addition to this he is the brother of Umm Habibah, the wife of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and he is one of his companions.
Such was his stand in the conflict that arose between Ali and Muawiyah.
He showed up the weakness of Amr's claims for Muawiyah to be the Caliph of the Muslims on the grounds of honor and status and on the grounds that he was the 'heir' to Uthman.

AhlulBayt Discussion Forum -> What happened to the muawiyah dude?
If Mu'awiyah was despotic; forcing people to insult Ali as Al-Tijani claims, then Mu'awiyah would not be quiet and would force Sa'ad to insult Ali, but nothing of that happened.
Ali (as) was the caliph before him, Ali (as) also was one of the best companions to the prophet (saw), Ali (as) did help Abu Bakr, Uthman, Umar in times when they didn't know what to do, especially with regards to Islamic law.
First he claims the hadith is a lie, but it's in Sahih Muslim, as I posted.

 Muawiya and Yazeed
Ja’far: According to unanimous opinion of Muslims, Muawiyah practised treachery and cheating against Ali (a.s.) and was the direct cause of battles that resulted in the bloodshed of Muslims.
Secondly, during the caliphate of Imam Hasan (a.s.), one of the chiefs of the youth of Paradise, Muawiyah continued his political intrigue till Imam Hasan (a.s.) was forced to abdicate the caliphal seat in view of the risk to Islamic nation and Muslims.
And when Muawiyah secured the throne, he used illegal (Haraam) methods against his opponents and against the followers of Ali (a.s.).

 Shi'sm - Mohamed S. Vawda
Hazrat Ali (R.A.) refused to accept the verdict and Amir Muawiyah (R.A.) accepted the same, and left the matter to be decided by the generality of the Muslims.
This led to discontent among the Umayyaite and Amir Muawiyah (R.A.) governor of Syria, refused to submit or recognise Hazrat Ali (R.A.) as Caliph until and unless full revenge was taken against the assassins of Hazrat Othman (R.A.).
Hazrat Ali's (R.A.) Caliphate was in a very precarious state and the Khwarjiites having separated themselves from Hazrat Ali (R.A.) indulged in violent bloodshed everywhere.

An introduction to fifth infallible Hazrat Imam Hussain
Nonetheless, after the death of Muawiyah his incapable son Yazeed being a proud and thickheaded person posed himself as the leader of the Muslims.
Muawiyah had several times insistedly warned him that you might dash against anybody except Hussain (A.S.), in which case you would get destroyed.
As such, you want to destroy the religion of God and make the Muslim ummah a toy by forcibly making them take the oath of allegiance for him (Yazeed).

History Forum > Difference between Shia and Sunni Islam
Ali was the Fourth Caliph; but Muawiyah rebelled, the two sides fought two or three battles (one was at Siffin where Muawiyah's troops stopped Ali's troops by putting pages from the Qur'an to the tips of their spears).
It's a long story; I can say is that at the end, Muawiyah was victorius and founded the Umawwid Caliphate while the followers of Ali and his sons Hasan and Husein became called as Shiite.
Jul 23 2003, 07:42 AM Ironicially, the Umayyad Caliphate of Muawiyah and his succesors was the most racist and Arab-nationalist dynasty in Islamic history.

This put him in conflict with Muawiyah, who had been victorious in his competition with Ali for the caliphate.
Muwaiyah began raising an army to face Hasan, but at the same time sent him letters asking him to give up his claim.

Understanding the Four Madhhabs (with footnotes)
Calling out the Quranic slogan, "Judgement is only Gods", they fought bitterly against Ali and his army which included many of the leading Companions, until, in the year 38, Imam Ali defeated them at the Battle of Nahrawan, where some ten thousand of them perished.
The other great dissident movement in early Islam was that of the Kharijites, literally, the seceders, so-called because they seceded from the army of the Caliph Ali when he agreed to settle his dispute with Muawiyah through arbitration.

The Consistent and the Compassionate One Imam Reza (A.S.) Network
Because of this and for many other reasons, Imam Hassan (AS) decided to end the dispute so that the perverse personality of Muawiyah and his evil designs would be revealed to the people beyond doubt and so that they would understand the true nature of the regime of the Umayyads.
First, even though his forces fought against Muawiyah, they had neither unity nor honor.
Soon the war fought against Imam Ali (AS) was waged again for power and the caliphate, and the armies of Imam Hassan (AS) and Muawiyah arrayed themselves for battle.

 Middle East Times
There is no doubt that Muawiyah was very smart and he knew well how to falsify the truth to keep his rule.
And as history repeats itself, nowadays some leaders of Islamic fundamentalist and Arab nationalist groups and media imitate Muawiyah's means to justify the terrorist attacks against children, women and civilians in Iraq, Turkey, London or in the United States.
Muawiyah, who is seen by some historians as the founder of Arab nationalism and the dictatorship principle in Islam, inspired the contemporary Arabist, dictators, and terrorists, such as presidents Saddam Hussein of Iraq and the late Hafez Assad of Syria.

Shia News Articles: Islam Isma (Infallibility) of the Prophets
It is to their advantage to portray the Prophet (PBUHandHF) as a man who listens to music and watches a dance with his wife, to justify the dancing and the music that was (and still is) rampant in their palaces.
Again, these traditions were inserted into their books by the Umayads, among others, to justify their own corruption and insolence.
For when the Prophet (PBUHandHF) sins so heinously as they depict him (PBUHandHF) in the above traditions, we can no longer blame Muawiyah, or Yazid, or Amr Ibn al-Aas, among others, when they sin.

Pieces continued to turn up for sale for years, after being found on the caravan route.

 Colossus of Rhodes
In AD 654 an Arab force under Muawiyah I captured Rhodes, who sold the remains to a travelling salesman from Edessa, according to the chronicler Theophanes.
Pliny the Elder remarked that few people could wrap their arms around the fallen thumb and that each of its fingers was larger than most statues.
The purchaser had the statue broken down, and transported the bronze scrap on the backs of 900 camels back to his home.
