Mozi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mozi also held a belief in the power of ghosts and spirits, although he is often thought to have only worshipped them pragmatically.
When Gongshu Ban threatened him with death, Mozi informed the king that his disciples had already trained the soldiers of Song on his defense methods, so it would be meaningless to kill him.
Thus he could argue that we should practice "bo-ai" because this is the way of heaven, since heaven nourishes and sustains all life without distinctions of rank.

 Mozi / Mei translation
Mozi said to Gong Mengzi: According to the ceremonial for the death of the ruler, the parents, the wife, and the first-born son, there shall be mourning for three years.
This is comparable to: "Why build houses?" "Houses are built for houses' sakes." Mozi said to Chengzi (14): In the teaching of the Confucianists there are four principles sufficient to ruin the empire: The Confucianists hold Heaven is unintelligent, and the ghosts are inanimate.
Gong Mengzi said to Mozi: "There is only righteousness and unrighteousness, but no such thing as propitiousness or unpropitiousness." Mozi said: The ancient sage-kings all regarded the ghosts and spirits as intelligent and in control of calamity and blessing.

 Mozi (Mo Tzu)
Mozi also says that to accept righteousness as a moral standard is to obey the Will of Heaven, and that to accept force (or power) as a moral standard is to disobey the Will of Heaven.
If everyone were to treat each other with the same love and respect which they would want to be shown to themselves, then there would be nothing to cause conflict between ruler and subject, between father and son, and between older brother and younger brother.
The Will of Heaven is the absolute standard for all moral conduct, and is a source of righteousness for all human beings.

Texts and Authorship: A Supplement to Mohism
Like most classical Chinese texts, the Mozi, our main source for Mohist thought, originally consisted of a collection of bamboo-strip scrolls called pian, or "books," each of which was itself a distinct text or series of short texts ranging in length from several hundred to several thousand graphs.
Third, in some essays, a significant portion of the argument is not attributed to Mozi at all, but presented in a narrator’s voice, with only occasional citations of Mozi’s words.
(A partial reconstruction is presented in Yates, 1980.) Unlike any other part of the Mozi, many of these books are organized as replies by Mozi to questions by a leading disciple, Qin Guli, who is referred to as "Master Qin," suggesting that the texts might have been composed by his disciples and their followers.

 Mo Tzu
Mozi, like Confucius, is similarly preoccupied with the human world and his religion totally concerned with human concerns.
However, the biggest difference between Mozi and Confucius lay in their definitions of human nature.
(Mozi did not tell any stories of Chinese deities.)

Both Confucius and Mozi also believed in an ethical heaven and a practical attitude toward life.
Mozi's belief in universal love as a result of enlightened self interest contrasted with Confucius's goal of social stability and harmony achieved through social hierarchy, and proper self-cultivation on the part of each individual.
Here, Mozi does not think people are altruistic, but think people do so out of enlightened self-interest.

The first and most important of these schools was that of Confucius, who became the chief representative of the Ruists (Confucians), the scholars and propagators of the wisdom and culture of the tradition.
Their great rivals were the Mohists, the followers of Mozi ("Master Mo"), who were critical of what they perceived to be the elitism and extravagance of the traditional culture.

logic - encyclopedia article about logic.
The conception of logic as the study of argument is historically fundamental, and was how the founders of distinct traditions of logic, namely Aristotle, Mozi and Aksapada Gautama, conceived of logic.
Logic arose (see below) from a concern with correctness of argumentation.
Modern logicians usually wish to ensure that logic studies just those arguments that arise from appropriately general forms of inference; so for example the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy says of logic that it does not, however, cover good reasoning as a whole.
