Islamic philosophy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Islamic philosophy (فلسفه ى اسلامى) is a longstanding attempt to create harmony between faith, reason or philosophy, and the religious teachings of Islam.
The main sources of classical or early Islamic philosophy are the religion of Islam itself and the Greek philosophical heritage which the early Muslims inherited as a result of conquests when Alexandria, Syria and Jundishapur came under Muslim rule.
The tradition of Islamic Philosophy is still very alive today despite the beliefs of many Western cycles considering this tradition to have abruptly ceased after the golden ages of Mulla Sadra’s doctrine and Suhrawardi’s (Mulla Sadra’s doctrine is called Hikmat-e-Mota’aliye or Transcendent (Exalted) Philosophy and Suhrawardi’s as Hikmat al-Ishraq or Illumination Philosophy).

Militant Islam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though the Deobandi philosophy is puritanical and wishes to remove non-Muslim (i.e., Hindu or Western) influence from Muslim societies, it was not especially violent or proselytising, confining its activity mostly to the establishment of madarassas, or Muslim religious schools.
This exhortation was followed by the Egyptian Islamic Jihad organisation, responsible for the assassination of Anwar Sadat, but with a twist: Islamic Jihad focused its efforts on "apostate" leaders of Islamic states, those who were secular and introduced Western ideas and practice to Islamic societies.
Named after the town of Deoband, where it originated, the movement was built around Islamic schools (principally) and taught an interpretation of Islam that encouraged the subsurvience of women, discouraged the use of many forms of technology and entertainment, and believed that only "revealed" or God-inspired knowledge (rather than human knowledge) should be followed.

The cornerstone of Islamic faith is a strict belief in monotheism.
Islamic belief holds that all the prophets successfully taught their nation the same message of the oneness of God.
According to Islamic tradition, Muhammad was illiterate; the revelations to Muhammad were later gathered by his companions and followers in book form.

 Islam - Simple English Wikipedia
Today, with modern communications and new ambitions of Islamic peoples, the most useful of the traditions are being revived strongly.
From its 7th century founding to about the 13th century when the Mongols sacked Baghdad or 1492 with the loss of Muslim Spain, Muslim thought and science was considered to lead the world.
A more specialized school for teaching and discussion only is called a madrassa, and the modern university emerged from a more specialized theological school called a jamia.

 Islamic philosophy, modern
The area of the Islamic world which continued most forcefully the Islamic tradition in philosophy after the decline of Peripateticism is undoubtedly Persia (see Islam, concept of philosophy in §§3-4).
During the Christian medieval period the Islamic world was in its cultural and political ascendancy, and was at the centre of theoretical work in both science and philosophy.
He modifies Islamic theology with the notion of the religious jurist-ruler's guardianship (velayat-e-faqih), whose role is to guide the community of faithful in their universal struggle (jihad).

 Islamic Philosophy
This textbook is compiled for the purpose of introducing the students of the Islamic seminaries in Qom to the rudiments of Islamic philosophy.
The fundamental quest of Islamic philosophy is therefore to understand the nature of Allah, our own relation to Allah, and in general how the nature of all beings relate to the Being which is named Allah.
Leaman outlines this history and demonstrates that, although the development of Islamic philosophy is closely linked with Islam itself, its form is not essentially connected to religion, and its leading ideas and arguments are of general philosophical significance.

 Indian and Islamic philosophy
Contrary to the opinions of the modern fundamentalists, Islam, in its origins, was not equivalent to the worship of ignorance and narrow-minded fanaticism.
Modern Buddhist thinkers tend to lay more stress on its "rationalistic" and "atheistic" character with the aim of making it more acceptable to educated westerners in search of a satisfying alternative to Christianity that is dying on its feet.
In complete contrast to what passed for philosophy in the universities of medieval Europe, where it was utterly subservient to the Catholic Church, Islamic philosophy was not a handmaid of theology.

 Sayyid Jamal al-Din Muhammad b
The claims of religion and philosophy, Afghani argues, are irreconcilable, and this is true across the religious boundaries whether we are talking about Islam, Christianity or Hinduism.
Afghani, unlike many of the revivalist thinkers of his generation, was well versed in traditional Islamic philosophy (hikmah), and considered philosophy essential for the revival of Islamic civilization.
One of the most important figures of modern Islam, Sayyid Jamal al-Din Afghani is considered to be the founding father of Islamic modernism.

Modern Islamic thinkers, however, have perhaps been too ready to accept Averroes' endorsements of religion without critical consideration of his philosophical interpretation of the meanings of religious statements.
The paper concludes with explanation of his understanding of the relation of philosophy and religion.
It is in this context that there has arisen the issue of whether he taught a doctrine of 'Double Truth,' one for religion and one for science and philosophy.

Ayman al-Zawahiri - THE MAN BEHIND BIN LADEN
The latter, in traditional Islamic discourse, refers to a period of ignorance that existed throughout the world before the Prophet Muhammad began receiving his divine revelations, in the seventh century.
Qutb returned to Egypt a radically changed man. In what he saw as the spiritual wasteland of America, he re-created himself as a militant Muslim, and he came back to Egypt with the vision of an Islam that would throw off the vulgar influences of the West.
"But the apparent surface calm concealed an immediate interaction with Sayyid Qutb's ideas and the formation of the nucleus of the modern Islamic jihad movement in Egypt." The same year Qutb was hanged, Zawahiri helped form an underground militant cell dedicated to replacing the secular Egyptian government with an Islamic one.

Publisher description for Library of Congress control number 2004380583
It provides a useful overview of 20th century philosophy in Iran, and traces the development of philosophical thought in the context of a religious tradition whose intellectual character was determined to a large extent by the contents of the Qur& revelation and the prophetic teachings.
The Elements of Islamic Metaphysics signals a new approach to the teaching of Islamic philosophy.
At the same time it attempts to demonstrate how philosophical thought is by nature independent of religious doctrine and differs from theology, which depends on revelation and tradition.

Amazon.ca: Books: History of Islamic Philosophy
Published here for the first time in English, this highly important work by Henry Corbin, the Islamic scholar, philosopher, and historian of religion, is a definitive interpretation of traditional Islamic philosophy from the beginning to the present day.
If you are interested in Islamic mysticism and metaphysics in particular you might want to also consult the works of Seyyed Hossein Nasr as well as anything issuing from the Traditionalist School (originally founded by such individuals as Rene Guenon and Frithjof Schuon).
Throughout this discussion of the various traditions within Islam we see the influence of gnosticism as well as of the other Abrahamic religions and "peoples of the Book" (Jews, Christians, and Muslims), and the influence of Zoroastrianism (with its dualistic worldview), as well as the influence of even Hinduism and Buddhism to a lesser extent.

Political philosophy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rise of Islam based on both the Qur'an and the political philosophy of Muhammad drastically altered the power balances and perceptions of origin of power in the Mediterranean region.
It had much in common with the Islamic thinking in that the Roman Catholics also subordinated philosophy to theology.
Early Muslim philosophy emphasized an inexorable link between science and religion, and the process of ijtihad to find truth - in effect all philosophy was "political" as it had real implications for governance.
