 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Missal
Certainly it may be affirmed with confidence that what was afterwards known as the "Missale plenum", a book like our present Missal, containing all the Epistles, Gospels, and the choral antiphons as well as the Mass prayers, did not come into existence before the year 900.
(Latin Missale from Missa, Mass), the book which contains the prayers said by the priest at the altar as well as all that is officially read or sung in connection with the offering of the holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the ecclesiastical year.
In these only one, or at most two or three Masses, were written; but as they were not used with choir and sacred ministers, all the service had to be said by the priest and all was consequently included in the one small booklet.

 Encyclopedia4U - Roman Missal - Encyclopedia Article
Roman Missal is the book containing all the fixed and changeable prayers and readings for the conduct of Roman Catholic Masseses.
But to allow for the celebration of Mass in vernacular languages translations to many languages of the world were prepared by local Bishop Conferences and approved by the Holy See.
Before the high Middle Ages priests had to have many books assembled for the Mass - Sacramentaries with the collected prayers; books containing the Gospels, whether arranged in excerpted form organized for public reading or regular Gospel books; and Psalters or collections of the Psalms.

About that Orans Posture What is it? What does the GIRM say? Can a bishop require it?
In some dioceses in the United States, people are being told that they should adopt this gesture, though it is not a customary posture for prayer for Catholic laity.
The Sacramentary revision, however, was not only replaced by the new Roman Missal, but it was officially and specifically rejected by the Holy See after the new Missal appeared.
When the proposed ICEL Sacramentary was sent to the Holy See for approval (after the November 1999 meeting of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops), the BCL posted on its web site a description of the orans posture, saying that this posture would be permitted when the new Sacramentary was approved.

 DOCUMENTS ON
This Congregation for Divine Worship, at the mandate of the Pope, now promulgates and declares to be the "editio typica" this new edition of the Roman Missal prepared in accord with the decrees of Vatican Council II.
The complete missal of the modern period was thus much more than a sacramentary, and it reflected the development by which the priest ordinarily took not only his own part in the eucharistic celebration but also the parts of the assembly, singers, readers, and even the deacon.
From the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship, 27 March 1975, Holy Thursday.

Observations on the English-language Translation of the Roman Missal
Accordingly, the Congregation asks that from now on the book be referred to in English as the Roman Missal, and that the official use of the word Sacramentary be discontinued in reference to it.
The Holy See’s position on this matter was made clear in a letter of the Congregation for Divine Worship to the Conferences of 20 September 1997.
However, in the case of texts from Sacred Scripture, it is the sacred text itself that should determine the qualities of the music to which it is to be set, rather than vice-versa.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Missal of Arbuthnott
A manuscript Scottish missal or mass-book, written in 1491 by James Sibbald, priest of Arbuthnott, in Scotland, for use in that church.
The differences between the Arbuthnott and the Sarum missals lie chiefly in the Sanctorale, Masses for certain saints being found in the one which are not in the other.
It commences with a leaf of "Prayers before Mass," then follows a "Form of Excommunication" in Scottish and Latin, succeeded by three leaves of rubrics and the calendar.

Communion, said the unsigned article, one of a series of bulletin inserts on the Roman Missal, is "the sacrament which unites us in the most profound way possible with Christ who, now gloriously risen from the dead, is the cause of our salvation."
Published with the new edition of the Roman Missal, the GIRM says communicants may receive standing or kneeling, as established by the bishops' conference.
The U.S. bishops requested a number of other adaptations to the GIRM.

 The Lorra Missal Part One
Dedicated to the Saints who, by the means of this Missal brought the Light of Christ to the world, and dedicated to those who would continue His mission.
May all of this be profitable unto salvation, through our Lord Jesus Christ Who reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, God throughout all ages of ages.
Only the Bishop, Priest, or Deacon may read the Gospel and give the Sermon.

 Today's Take: October 30, 2003
The idea of an adult laity has gotten fulsome lip service from many bishops, but it is always disconnected from real decision making, full, active and conscious participation in the life of our church.
The apostolic model is being defined by emphasis as the old power pyramid with God at the top and the laity at the bottom, and the holy ordained in between as brokers.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM, pronounced "germ") is the latest example of this incremental assault on the spirit of Vatican II.

We are pleased to present here the text of the Ordinary and Canon of the Mass from the "Knott Missal" in parallel with the Latin text of the Roman Missal.
The latter is most readily available, and thus in the more common use in our parishes and missions.

The conflict over reverence -- No-kneeling orders cause consternation, grief
The July issue of the BCL Newsletter stated that kneeling is "not a licit posture for receiving holy Communion in the dioceses of the United States of America unless the bishop of a particular diocese has derogated from this norm in an individual and extraordinary circumstance".
Such comments have been re-echoing throughout the country for months, and intensified this summer when the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy published a comment on the " American Adaptations " to the new Roman Missal's regulations for celebration of Mass.

 Missal
However, the ornament and miniature on the opening page of the manuscript definitely indicate that it is of French origin.
The fact that this Missal honors particular saints by its calendar and litany indicates that it was made by friars of the Franciscan order.

 Missal
The large-scale missal was intended to be viewed at a distance by a choir who shared it amongst themselves.
The hair follicles of the calf from which this vellum was obtained still show clearly in this manuscript and were not at all considered a distraction or a flaw.
It was much easier to write out one large book for multiple use than it was to write out a requisite number of individual copies.
