Militant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fundamendalist Christian militants engage in constant warfare against the Christian church's enemies (though fundamentalism itself does not, by definition, class as militant).
The word militant comes from the 15th Century Latin "militare" meaning "to serve as a soldier".
Church militant (Ecclesia Militans) - Christians who are living.

Militant Islam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wahhabists, who emerged in the 18th century led by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, also believed that it was necessary to live according to the strict dictates of Islam, which they interpreted to mean living in the manner that the prophet Muhammad and his followers had lived in during the seventh century in Medina.
Named after the town of Deoband, where it originated, the movement was built around Islamic schools (principally) and taught an interpretation of Islam that encouraged the subsurvience of women, discouraged the use of many forms of technology and entertainment, and believed that only "revealed" or God-inspired knowledge (rather than human knowledge) should be followed.
Though the Deobandi philosophy is puritanical and wishes to remove non-Muslim (i.e., Hindu or Western) influence from Muslim societies, it was not especially violent or proselytising, confining its activity mostly to the establishment of madarassas, or Muslim religious schools.

FrontPage magazine.com :: The Search for Moderate Islam by Lawrence Auster
While he warns that militant Islam aims to overthrow the West and regain lost Islamic glory, he insists with equal conviction that traditional, moderate Islam is fully capable of living at peace with the rest of the world.
It's a mistake to blame Islam, a religion fourteen centuries old, for the evil that should be ascribed to militant Islam, a totalitarian ideology less than a century old.
In contrast to the view of Islam advanced by Pipes, which we might call "ecumenist" because it looks forward to an ultimate harmony and even union between Islam and the West, there is a perspective that we might call "civilizationist," because it insists that there are essential incompatibilities between the two civilizations.

Human Events: Militant Islam real threat
Militant Islam is an ideology grounded in a major religion.
Naming militant Islam as the enemy reveals that the problem goes beyond terrorists to include those who in non-violent ways forward the totalitarian agenda-that includes its funders, preachers, apologists, and lobbyists.
Here is President George W. Bush on the subject some days ago: "Islam, as practiced by the vast majority of people, is a peaceful religion, a religion that respects others." Fine, but that completely avoids the tough issues facing his administration.

Amazon.ca: Books: Militant Islam Reaches America
Militant Islam is currently in America, not to mention many other places throughout the world where decent people would prefer it remain away.
From this "moderate" position, Pipes argues that Islam is not an inherent threat to Western civilization, but that militant Islam, a branch of Islamic piety that seeks to bring the world under control of Islamic law, is the greatest threat since the cold war.
"Militant Islam" or "Islamism" is distinguished from Islam generically; Islamism is a totalitarian ideology stitched together out of Marxist doctrines and practices and a naive (outside of tradition, uninformed, unnuanced, ahistorical, "protestant") reading of the Qur'an.

Book Review : Militant Islam Reaches America
Mainstream Islam is even less likely than Christianity to regard itself as “a personal faith.” The Koran seems to contemplate a theocratic state, not a church that is separate from the institutions of the state, as is ideally the case in Christianity.
Under the principles of militant Islam, of which Usama bin Laden is the most infamous exponent, the entire Muslim community is deemed to have been militarily, culturally and spiritually corrupted by Westerners.
Islamism/militant Islam “adapts an age-old faith to the political requirements of our day by adopting some of the key premises of earlier totalitarianisms, fascism and Marxism-Leninism.” Islamism is a form of “radical utopianism” (p.

israelinsider: Fighting militant Islam, without bias
The problem at hand is not the religion of Islam but the totalitarian ideology of Islamism.
Political leaders should regularly and publicly distinguish between Islam, the religion of Muslims, and Islamism, the totalitarian ideology.
But one can note two common points: Islam is, more than any other major religion, deeply political, in the sense that it pushes its adherents to hold power; and once Muslims do gain power, they feel a strong impetus to apply the laws of Islam, the shari`a.

I see militant Islam as a global affliction whose victims count peoples of all religions.
I approach the religion of Islam in a neutral fashion, neither praising it nor attacking it but in a spirit of inquiry.

Daniel Pipes’ Militant Islam Reaches America: a Review
Americans must also try to reassure their Muslim allies that a secular Islam, which can coexist peacefully with Western values, is the only viable form of Islam.
That is precisely why Americans must reach out to moderate Muslims, who are Islam’s silent majority, and convince them that it is just as much in their interest, as it is in the West’s, to defeat Islamic fundamentalism.
The new world conflict, therefore, is not between the West and the Muslim religion, but between the West and Islamism.

'Militant Islam Reaches America' By Daniel Pipes
He makes the major and defining distinction between Islam -- a religion practiced by a fifth of the world's population -- and militant Islam, which he believes poses a serious threat to the U.S. as a society.
He does not understate the global appeal of militant Islam, calling it "the most vibrant and coherent ideological movement in the world today." He also believes it's a dangerous successor to communism and fascism.
One that he considers to be false is the "depraved because they are deprived" argument which goes: "Militant Islam is rooted in poverty and thus can be extirpated through economic development."

On Coming to Terms: Militant Islam or Radical Islam? :: War on Terror - the issues. :: Hyscience
Islamism remains my preferred term (because it is used by Islamists themselves; and because of its parallel with the other ideological "isms"), but it is heavy to say, so after 9/11, I adopted militant Islam and used it in the title of a book and in many articles and television appearances.
Now just having completed a post addressing the issues of faith and intelligent design, it seems appropriate to comment on what I believe to be the difference between a believer(one that has faith) in Islam and a believer in radical Islam(a radical Islamist).

In the autocratic states of the Middle East, adherence to the religion of Islam is compulsory.
This belief about the global Islamic enterprise is based on a long-held belief that there are only two possibilities for the world.
In the book, bin Laden’s second-in-command characterizes democracy as “a new religion that must be destroyed by war” and all those who support democracy as “infidels.” He also condemns Muslims who have renounced jihad as the means for spreading Islam.

The Danger Within: Militant Islam in America
After reading several books about Islam and reading this fine article, I am now convinced that their intentions are not to assimilate but to conquer.
In June 1991, Siraj Wahaj, a black convert to Islam and the recipient of some of the American Muslim community's highest honors, had the privilege of becoming the first Muslim to deliver the daily prayer in the U.S. House of Representatives.
And, given what they hold to be the truth of their message and the depravity of American culture, Islamists are optimistic about their chances of success.

Militant Islam Is Still Enemy No. 1
Pipes says, "Militant Islam is a rabid utopian ideology along the lines of fascism and Marxism-Leninism — [seeking] totalitarian means to overthrow governments and to dominate the world, much like fascism and communism.
Moreover, the prophet Muhammad was more successful winning converts to Islam in Medina with violence and the sword than he was in Mecca with peace and persuasion.
And still the U.S. government fails to "proclaim militant Islam our strategic enemy" but instead goes along with blandishments about "good Muslims" and "true Islam" being a religion of peace.

"Wahhabi Islam differs from other currents or schools in Sunni Islam mainly in its supposed "purity" -- that is, its strict adherence to what is taken as the original form of Islam, practiced by the Prophet and his Companions.

According to Daniel Pipes, ten to fifteen percent of the world's 1.2 billion Muslims adhere to militant Islam.
