Questioning "Western Science" Continued. : İstanbul IMC
In India the ultimate 'truth' has always been held to be different from both avidya, the knowledge of the mortal world, and vidya, the knowledge of the immortal in man and the universe.
The conceptions that the whole world is potentially 'usable', that the divine mind can be deciphered to find ways to put the world to use, and that human knowledge at any given stage can be regarded as the uniquely true representation of reality are perhaps not originally Bacon's or even of his times.
Thus Husserl through his phenomenology will not only provide apodictic certainty about the 'meaning of the truth' of Baconian sciences, but will also 'prove' with the same certainty the unique 'humanity' of the Greek humanity and its descendants, the European people.

The Socratic Method, by Leonard Nelson
To Socrates the test of whether a man loves wisdom is whether he welcomes his ignorance in order to attain to better knowledge.
But this is contingent on the appearance of teachers who will find the key to his language by resorting to the "maieutic" services [note] of the Socratic method, instituting the laborious and Protracted exercises that must not frighten away those who plan to dedicate themselves to philosophy.
As a faithful disciple of Socrates and of his great successor Plato, I find it rather difficult to justify my acceptance of your invitation to talk to you about the Socratic method.

LT78 - TWO VIEWS OF HISTORICAL CRITICISM - II. HISTORICAL CRITICISM AS AN HISTORICAL METHOD
For instance, Catholic form-critics halt their dissolving of the historical truth of the biblical text where a dogma of the Church would otherwise be attacked, not because their exegetical method calls for them to halt, but because the discipline of faith demands it.
After claiming to have eliminated almost all of the historical reality from the Gospel accounts, and to have exposed the literal teaching of the Gospels as primitive religious fantasy unacceptable to modern man, he had to find some excuse for contemporary Christians to believe and for contemporary preachers to preach.
Historical method basically involves four things: a) a technique of investigation; b) an ability to identify what really took place; c) knowledge of what others are affirming in one's own field, in cognate fields, and in allied disciplines; d) an ability to express correctly what one has ascertained.

 Socratic Method Research Portal
I found the use of the Socratic Method to be vastly superior to the traditional forms of discussion in its effectiveness at engaging conservative Christian men on this dialogue’s subject.
The advantage of the Socratic Method over the more common forms of discussion or debate is that the Socratic questioner may abandon the burdensome pretense of knowing and take the more subordinate and dialectically effective role as a seeker of understanding.
The Socratic Method deconstructs people’s understanding using their own words and leaves them with the experience of being less sure of what they previously knew with greater certainty.

LT77 - TWO VIEWS OF HISTORICAL CRITICISM - I. HISTORICAL CRITICISM AS A CRITICAL METHOD
Rationalism acquired its modern meaning in 1637 with the publication of the Discourse on Method of René Descartes (1596-1650), in which he declared that there are in man certain innate, self-evident principles from which all true knowledge must necessarily flow.
The present article is critical of the "historical-critical method," as this term is commonly understood today, but it is aimed only at technical aspects of the method itself and does not question the good faith or loyal intentions of the Catholic historical-critics whom it quotes for the sake of example.
Scholars of the historical-critical school profess that, in traditional Catholic exegesis up to and often including the twentieth century, the limitations of the human authorship of the sacred books were systematically overlooked or underestimated, while scholars of the traditional school maintain that historical-critics downplay the divine authorship and the supernatural effects of divine inspiration.

In this age old method of argumention, an advocate manufactures a position (a straw man) and claims that it's the position held by his opponent.
Rove's remarks are just another example of the rhetorical device that has become the primary method of persuasion among conservative pundits and politicians over the last decade: the straw man argument.
The result is a greater willingness to engage in straw man arguments, to mischaracterize and dissemble in an effort to persuade.

FIRST BOOK INFLUENCE OF DEMOCRACY ON THE ACTION OF INTELLECT IN THE UNITED STATES
Yet it is easy to perceive that almost all the inhabitants of the United States use their minds in the same manner, and direct them according to the same rules; that is to say, without ever having taken the trouble to define the rules, they have a philosophical method common to the whole people.
The philosophical method here designated may have been born in the sixteenth century; it may have been more accurately defined and more extensively applied in the seventeenth; but neither in the one nor in the other could it be commonly adopted.
The philosophers of the eighteenth century, generalizing at length on the same principle, undertook to submit to the private judgment of each man all the objects of his belief.

Note also that the length of the synset intersection is about 30-40% of the mean synset number for Italian and English news respectively.

 Chapter 4
For many hypotheses this method of induction couldn't possibly have been used for the simple reason that these hypotheses contain theoretical terms whose instances either have not as yet been observed or even more importantly for some cases, observation is in principle impossible.
This emphasis on the collection of facts, while an improvement on the medieval method of citing authorities, can be overemphasized to the point of obliterating the contributions of the creative imagination of man. Furthermore, the motto "observe and compile all the facts" is demanding the unattainable.
The method attributed to Bacon, therefore, overstresses observation or "fact" gathering without giving proper role to man's judgment in the formulation of hypotheses by his creative imagination.

 About the Suzuki Method
His Talent Education Method is an internationally-known and respected way to instruct children in music mainly because of its highly successful results both in producing wonderful musicians, and more importantly in Dr. Suzuki's opinion, wonderful human beings.
When Suzuki was a young man, living and studying in Germany, he was struck by the ease with which the very young children around him spoke the language which he, as an adult, was struggling to learn.
The Suzuki method of learning music (or as Dr. Suzuki preferred to have it called, Talent Education) is modeled on the "Mother Tongue" method, or in other words, how we all naturally learn to speak our native language.

Nat' Academies Press, Engineering in Society (1985)
Indeed, what could be more flattering to engineers than to have designers, and especially architects, treat them not merely as producers of goods but rather as creators of profoundly humane and beautiful objects.
In the nineteenth century it was thought that the relationships of science, engineering, and society could be captured in a rather simple formula, a crass but representative version of which served as the motto for the Century of Progress World's Fair held in Chicago in 1933: Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms.
He believed the success of modern engineering was a consequence of the progress of empirical science and he was appalled by the degree to which engineering schools continued to stress the acquisition of information rather than the mastery of modern methods of scientific investigation.
