Metaphorical expressions were assumed to be mutually exclusive with the realm of ordinary everyday language: everyday language had no metaphor, and metaphor used mechanisms outside the realm of everyday conventional language.
Metaphor is one kind of nonliteral language under the larger blanket of figurative language: language which means more than is what literally stated.
These metaphors have typically been invented spontaneously by people who understood some aspect of computing in order to communicate with others, to be able to tell them about something they didn't already understand.
