Melchizedek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Melchizedek is a character in the early story of humanity as told in the Hebrew Bible.
Melchizedek or Malki-tzédek (מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק / מַלְכִּי־צָדֶק "My king is righteous", Standard Hebrew Malki-ẓédeq / Malki-ẓádeq, Tiberian Hebrew Malkî-ṣéḏeq / Malkî-ṣāḏeq), sometimes written Melchisedec, Melchisedech or Melchisedek, is a character in the Bible who appeared in Genesis to the patriarch Abraham.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints relies on additional scripture beyond the Bible, including the Doctrine and Covenants and Book of Mormon.

The Melchizedek Priesthood, to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the authority and power to act in the name of God including the authority to perform ordinances and to preside over and direct the affairs of his Church and Kingdom.
The full title of the Priesthood is the "Holy Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God," but is usually referred to in the shortened form, named for Melchizedek, king of Salem.
In the Church, the Aaronic Priesthood, being named after Aaron in the Old Testament, is the successor of the Levitical Priesthood.

 Bible Characters
Although Melchizedek is mentioned only twice in the Old Testament (OT), the Epistle to the Hebrews, which mentions him in a number of chapters, made of this early portrayal in the OT a basis for the most important teachings of Christianity on the Salvation offered by Christ and on His ministry as a Priest.
The OT also tell us that the priesthood of Christ was according to the order of Melchizedek.
It is therefore wrong to apply the ritual teachings of the OT to the NT since we are dealing with a new priesthood (enacted) according to Melchizedek, a new law and a new covenant (7:12; 8:6).

Melchizedek was a real person, a human being who was a "priest of the Most High God" on the basis of the patriarchal priesthood that obtained before the establishment of the Levitical priest after the Exodus (see the link: "Gentile Patriarchy" from part 5 of the Satanic Rebellion series).
He is used by way of comparison in Hebrews 7:1-3 to explain by analogy the superiority of the eternal and spiritual priesthood of Jesus over the fleshly and temporal Levitical priesthood.
Every other previous legitimate priest of God (including all of the Levitical priests) could only stand before God on the basis of the promise of the coming sacrifice of Jesus Christ (that is what all the animal sacrifices and their blood foreshadow).

The two divisions of priesthood in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are the Aaronic and the Melchizedek.
Over the Aaronic Priesthood, the "president is to be a bishop; for this is one of the duties of this priesthood" (D&C 107:88), but bishops are also ordained high priests of the Melchizedek Priesthood because they preside and are not literal descendants of Aaron.
Thus the Aaronic Priesthood continues in its role as a preparatory priesthood, training young men in gospel principles and priesthood powers as they mature in service related to the preparatory gospel: faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism for the remission of sins, and love of God and fellow beings.

Ambrose stated that Melchizedek was not an angel but was a holy man and a priest of God who prefigured Christ as a "type" or a shadow of the Truth (Of the Christian Faith, III, xi, 87-89).
One possibility is for Melchizedek to have been the pre-incarnate Son of God, similar to some of the Theophanies.

This matter of the two orders of priesthood in the Church of Christ, and lineal priesthood of the old law being in the church, all originated in the mind of Sydney Rigdon.
