Aquarius itself was said to represent the god who flooded the earth, the water it seems to pour, which sometimes includes the constellation of Eridanus as a river, was said to depict this by the Greeks.
They belonged to the giant Diomedes, King of Thrace, a son of Ares and Cyrene who lived on the shores of the Black Sea.
According to the Trojan War epics, King Diomedes, the hero of Argo, who fought against the god Ares during the war, stole horses from the stables of King Rhesus of Thrace.

This was the eighth labor, Heracles was sent by Eurystheus to capture and bring back the mares of Diomedes, a Thracian chief (according to some sources he was the son of Ares and Cyrene, and was known as Diomedes king of Thrace).
In the party was a young boy named Abderus, and Heracles was very fond of this youth, and made him his companion.
Heracles gave the youth a worthy burial, then founded the city of Abdera on the site next to his tomb.
