WWW Virtual Library: BUDDHISM IN SRI LANKA
After the Mahameghavana was offered to the Sangha, Mahinda at once set about to plan the headquaters of Buddhism which in later times became the famous Mahavihara, the great centre of Buddhist culture and learning in the Island, the stronghold of the Theravada.
Mahinda, therefore, made in public the most significant announcement that Buddhism would be established in Sri Lanka.
The Mahavihara was the original and first centre of Buddhism, hallowed by Mahinda himself; its monks were proud of the great tradition, and zealously guarded the honour and authority of the vihara.

 Mahinda
Mahinda pointed out to the king various spots destined to be connected with the growth of the sásana in Ceylon, offering flowers at the same, and at the site of the (later) Mahá Thúpa, he described the visits of the Four Buddhas of this kappa to Ceylon.
Among Mahinda's benefactions was the erection of the Dámavihára-parivena and the Sanníratittha vihára in Pulatthipura, also the costly Ratanapásáda, containing a golden image of the Buddha.
After the full moon day of Kattika, at the conclusion of the pavárana ceremony, Mahinda held a consultation with Devánampiyatissa and sent Sumanasámanera to Pátaliputta to bring the relics of the Buddha from Dhammásoka and other relics from Sakka.

Mahinda, who was just as good as psychologist as a missionary, took the opportunity to request King Devanampiyatissa to obtain from Emperor Asoka of India some bodily relics of the Buddha (Saririka dhatu) that could be worshipped in the same manner as the Sri Maha Bodhi in remembrance of his teachings.
Poson Poya is the time when thousands of devotees wend their way to Mihintale to celebrate the coming of Thera Mahinda with the teachings of the Buddha.
Since the rules (vinaya) did not permit Mahinda to carry out the ordination, his sister Theri Sangamitta came from India to do it, bringing with her a branch of the Pipul (Ficus) or Bodhi tree at Gaya under which the Buddha meditated and attained ultimately enlightenment.

BuddhaNet.Net: Sacred Island - A Buddhist Pilgrim's Guide to Sri Lanka: Mihintale
Legend says Mahinda flew from there to Sri Lanka but a very ancient tradition from south India attributes the introduction of Buddhism to that region to Mahinda so it is likely he was active there for some time before going to Sri Lanka.
The king was somewhat taken aback by the monks but Mahinda reassured him saying; ‘Oh great king, we are monks, disciples of the King of Truth.
The inscription, by King Mahinda IV, is one of the longest and most interesting from ancient Sri Lanka and tells us a great deal about what life was like at Mihintale.

Religion in Sri Lanka Travel Guide to SriLanka
Mahinda' s arrival in Sri Lanka marked the significant development of Sri Lankan culture; he brought about not only a new religion, but also the whole civilization of Buddhist India, be it arts, architecture, and literature.
When Arhat Mahinda came to Sri Lanka, he brought with him the Theravada canon or orthodox Buddhism, regarded as the most ancient sect of Buddhism using the Pali language unlike the Mahayana Buddhism which embraces Sanskrit.
The first confrontation of the Sinhalese king named Devanampiyatissa and Arhat Mahinda, the celebrated missionary of Buddhism in 306 B.C. (237 years after the death of the Buddha) paved way for the establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Maha Thera Mahinda preached the doctrine of the Buddha to the King and the people, and took residence at Mihintale where he continued to live until his death.
It came to be known as Mihintale, after the arrival of Maha Mahinda Thera, the great apostle of Buddhism, on the Poson full moon day in 306 BC (2, 310 years ago).

Mihintale, guardian of the memory of Mahinda
This place is called "Mihindu-Guha" or Mahinda’s cave, where he is said to have spent much of his time in meditation.
It was at Mihintale that the apostle Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa on a full moon day in the month of Poson and officially introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka.
In the soft evening air, one is able to experience the spell of antiquity and the spirit of Arahat Mahinda, Apostle of the romantic coming of Buddhism to Lanka in King Tissa’s bygone day.

All these chronicles go to prove that Buddha Dhamma was well known by the people of Lankadipa before the advent of Arhat Mahinda in the year 236 after the Buddha.
The Dipavamsa the oldest known Pali chronicle (edited and translated by Oldenburg) not only gives an account of the visit of Gautama Buddha and Arhat Mahinda but also gives a vivd description of the visit to the island of Kakusanda Buddha, Konagamana Buddha and Kashyapa Buddha.
The Dhamma, according to the Chronicles of Lanka was introduced and preached by Sakyamuni Buddha himself 281 years before the arrival of Arhat Mahinda.

However, Arhat Mahinda postponed his mission to Sri Lanka until the time was appropriate for him to undertake the mission, as the then king Mutasiva (367-307 BC), was too old and feeble to understand the doctrine of the Buddha.
Arhat Mahinda, the profoundly sapient thera, came to Sri Lanka as bidden by his father, the emperor Asoka (264-267 BC) of India, who was earlier known as Chandasoka (Asoka the wicked), but later, when he renounced armed conquests, he came to be known as Dharmasoka (Asoka the pious).
One was Mahendra (Mahinda) and the other was Sanghamitra (Sangamitta), both of whom entered the holy order of a bhikku and bhikkuni in fulfilment of the wish of their father Asoka.

The establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka is attributed to this son of Asoka, who brought the religion with him when he came here about the middle of the 3rd Century B.C. at the conclusion of the Third Buddhist Council at Pataliputra (in Patna) under the royal patronage of Asoka.
But he who has son or daughter enter the religious order is a kinsman of the religion and a withal a giver of gifts.
Perhaps, the most important event in the history of Buddhism in this country is the coming of Mahinda.

It was here in 246 BCE that the Buddhist apostle Arhat Mahinda Thero, special envoy of his father (Asoka, 264-267 BC King of India), met King Devanampiyatissa (307-267 BCE) on the full moon day in the month of Poson and officially introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka.
The Ambasthala dagaba (shrine containing relics) is known as the ‘mango-tree stupa’, deriving its name from a riddle that Mahinda is said to have posed to the king to see how clever a student of religion he would be.
The ancient monastery contains some important relics said to be from the body of Mahinda, and even some of the Buddha himself.

According to these facts of dhamma, it is observed that Anbudu Mahinda the Great Thero happened to be the Brahmin Janussoni, while King Devanam Piyatissa was the wanderer Pilotika, during the time of the Buddha.
Then the King with full of devotion invited Venerable Mahinda Thero to come to the city of Anuradhapura and preach the dhamma proclaimed by the Revered Buddha to the people living in the city of Anuradhapua including himself.
True to the phenomenon of ‘naca so naca anno” Great Thero Mahinda is not exactly the Brahmin Janussoni of the Revered Buddha days nor is he not the same person.
