Unidentified artist: Amitabha Triad [Korea] (30.76.298) Object Page Timeline of Art History The Metropolitan Museum ...
Amitabha's identity is established by his hand gesture, the dharmachakramudra, representing the preaching of the Buddhist law, and by the presence of the bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara (Kwanûm), on his left, and Mahasthamaprapta (Tae Seji), on his right.
On his chest is a svastika, an auspicious symbol representing Buddhist teaching; on his palms and the sole of his one visible foot are chakra (wheel) motifs, symbolizing the ever-turning dharma (law).
The three figures are arranged as a triad—a long-established format that can be found in India several centuries earlier and appears in Korean Buddhist sculpture by at least the sixth century.

His name in Sanskrit, Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, signifies that he is the possessor of great authority and power, delegated no doubt from the Other Power of Amida's Vows, since Daiseishi embodies Amida's Wisdom, just as Kannon does his Compassion.
According to the Amitayur-dhyana-sutra, Seishi therefore possesses the power to break the bonds of those born in the Three Worlds of Suffering: the unfortunate realms of the animals, the hungry ghosts, and the inhabitants of the hells.
Enough has already been said on the subject of Avalokiteshvara but a few words on his counterpartner, Daiseishi, may not go amiss, since he is less well known, at least in the West.
