The Magnificat locates the mystery of the Savior God and gives its coordinates.”13 In the words of Redemptoris mater, the canticle reveals “the truth about the God of the Covenant,” a truth that has been obscured by sin and lack of faith.
The Magnificat is a prayer that Scripture has placed on the lips of the Virgin Mary and that the Church places on the lips of believers.

MARY SINGS THE PRAISES OF GOD
Inspired by the Old Testament and by the spirituality of the daughter of Zion, the Magnificat surpasses the prophetic texts on which it is based, revealing in her who is "full of grace" the beginning of a divine intervention which far exceeds Israel's messianic hopes: the holy mystery of the Incarnation of the Word.
The Magnificat is the first fruit of the various forms of devotion, passed on from one generation to the next, in which the Church has expressed her love for the Virgin of Nazareth.
The word Magnificat, the Latin version of a Greek word with the same meaning, celebrates the greatness of God, who reveals his omnipotence through the angel's message, surpassing the expectations and hopes of the people of the Covenant, and even the noblest aspirations of the human soul.

Magnificat is a reminder that beauty and regularity are intrinsic to worship and can attract people to a life of more intense prayer.
Moreover, the beauty of Magnificat as a publication does justice to the majesty of its material — unlike so many other “worship aids” (that phrase again!), which are, to be gentle, ugly as sin.
Dumont believed, with the Church, that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives: it gives us food for the journey of faith even as it gives us a foretaste of where that journey is destined to end.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Magnificat
At the intonation "Magnificat", all who are in the sanctuary arise, and the celebrant (having first removed his birretta "in honour of the canticles") goes with his assistants to the altar, where, with the customary reverences, etc., he blesses the incense and incenses the altar as at the beginning of solemn Mass.
In some churches the Magnificat is sung at devotions outside of Vespers.
The "Magnificat", "Benedictus" (Canticle of Zachary–Luke, i, 68- 79), and "Nunc Dimittis" (Canticle of Simeon–Luke, ii, 29- 32) are also styled "evangelical canticles", as they are found in the Gospel (Evangelium) of St. Luke.

 The Mary Page: Meditations
This is why the Magnificat, the reaction of the woman who knows that God inhabits her virginal womb, reaches out both to the past and to the future, is retrospective and prophecy at the same time.
The Magnificat is totally imbued with the faith and hope of Israel, but simultaneously it becomes the "scale of perfection" for all future generations.
But let us return to the Magnificat and to Mary's untypically auto-directed prophecy, when she says: "All generations will call me blessed." This word is not wishful and self-congratulatory day-dreaming.

One of the few works in which Bach used Latin text (another being the great Mass in B minor), the Magnificat was composed to be first performed at Vespers on Christmas Day 1723, at the Church of St Nicholas, Lepizig - 275 years ago.
"Magnificat anima mea Dominum" - "'My soul doth magnify the Lord': The Virgin's answer to her cousin Elizabeth, who hails her as the mother of God, blessed among women." In retrospect, the brilliance of Bach's setting seems overblown, too ornate, and yet none can doubt the power of the music, nor the simple words.
