Islamic calendar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first surviving attested use of the Hijri calendar is on a papyrus from Egypt in 22 AH, PERF 558.
In 638 (AH 17), the second Caliph Umar began numbering the years of the Islamic calendar from the year of the Hijra, which was postdated AH 1.
On the other hand, Muhammad forbade the intercalary month (released the calendar from the seasons) near the end of his life, which implies a pre-Islamic year beginning near the vernal equinox because that is when the modern lunar year began during his last year.

 Calendars and their History
This calendar is the official calendar of Israel and is the liturgical calendar of the Jewish faith.
The ecclesiastical calendars of Christian churches are based on cycles of movable and immovable feasts.
The form of the Islamic calendar, as a lunar calendar without intercalation, was laid down by the Prophet in the Qur'an (Sura IX, verse 36-37) and in his sermon at the Farewell Pilgrimage.

History & info - the Islamic calendar
The calendar is based on the Qur'an (Sura IX, 36-37) and its proper observance is a sacred duty for Muslims.
The 1st day of the 5th month of C.E. 20874 in the Gregorian calendar will also be (approximately) the 1st day of the 5th month of AH 20874 of the Islamic calendar.
As the year in the Islamic calendar is about 11 days shorter than the year in the Christian calendar, the Islamic years are slowly gaining in on the Christian years.

 Encyclopedia: Thai lunar calendar
The Thai lunar calendar or Patitin Chantarakati (Thai: ปฏิทินจันทรคติ) was replaced by the Patitin Suriyakati (ปฎิทินสุริยคติ) Thai solar calendar in AD 1888 2431 BE for most purposes, but the Chantarakati still determines most Buddhist feast or holy days, as well as a day for the famous Loy Krathong festival.
The Thai lunar calendar or Chantarakati calendar (ปฏิทินจันทรคติ) was used in Thailand until 1888, when it was replaced by the Thai solar calendar which is used today.
In practice, many Thais reckon their ages from this sequence of Animals, though the solar calendar determines age at law.

 The Goddess Lunar Calendar
Since the average length of the month in the Goddess Calendar is the same as the value of the current synodic month, to seven decimal places, it is reasonable to expect that the Goddess Calendar will stay in sync with the Moon over a period of at least several millennia.
To reckon time according to this calendar it is necessary only to know the Goddess date for a particular day and to be able to calculate the date which follows any given date.
If we consider the vernal equinox year (the mean interval between vernal equinoxes) of 365.24237 days then the Goddess Calendar year differs from this by 0.00021 days, leading to a discrepancy with respect to the seasons of one day in about 4762 years.

 Home Page for Calendar Reform
Emperor Constantine then reformed the calendar in the 4th century, by introducing the seven-day week, probably modeled on the Christian sabbatical cycle.
The Eastern Orthodox Churches continued observing the Julian Calendar until 1923, at which time some, but not all, skipped the first 13 days in October, and introduced a "Revised Julian Calendar" with a unique variation on the leap-year rule.
At that time, 11 days had to be excised in order to bring the British calendar into sync with the rest of Europe.

 Judaism 101: Jewish Calendar
Holidays are celebrated on the same day of the Jewish calendar every year, but the Jewish year is not the same length as a solar year on the Gregorian calendar used by most of the western world, so the date shifts on the Gregorian calendar.
Of course, the earlier Gregorian dates are artificial, since the Gregorian calendar did not exist until the 16th century and was not accepted in many parts of the world until much later.
A few years ago, I was in a synagogue, and I overheard one man ask another, "When is Chanukkah this year?" The other man smiled slyly and replied, "Same as always: the 25th of Kislev." This humorous comment makes an important point: the date of Jewish holidays does not change from year to year.

 Lunar Calendar in Japan
This reform was the work primarily of the "calendar scholars" Harumi Shibukawa and Anbu Yasutomi with their student and later colleague, Jinzan Tani.
In 806, the Buddhist monk and scholar Koubou Daishi wrote that Japanese calendar scholars had trouble determining good and bad days because they did not know "Mitsubi" (the secret day).
Before this year, as in China, Sunday had no special significance (workers did not get any days "off"), and the most important aspect of each day was determining whether it was "good" or "bad" (a practice that continues in "unofficial" lunar calendar use to this day).

Another aspect of the lunar calendar that survives into modern Japan as a kind of superstition, is the subdivision of the calendar into six days (rokuyo), similar to the subdivision of the modern calendar into seven weekdays.
The lunar calendars were based on the cycle of the moon, resulting in years of twelve months of 29 or 30 days (the moon takes about 29 1/2 days to circle the earth), and an occasional 13th month to even out the discrepancy to the solar cycle of 365 1/4 days, i.e.
