The missionary brethren are watching with wise and jealous care over the purity, the discipline, and the spiritual independence of the Native churches; and a UNION of those churches for mutual aid has been inaugurated during the year.
It has from the first been a settled rule with the Society's missionaries that catechists and preachers should be men of known and proved piety; and that all candidates for theological classes shall be members of the church.
In a few of the older Missions of the Society, the duty of instructing the heathen has been almost complete; the population are nominally Christian, and in most of these communities there is a strong nucleus of spiritual life in a valuable body of Church members.

The Society began to acquire more lands for the building of churches and schools and often was able to acquire them at confessional rates on account of being a religious body and this led to the expansion of their scope of influence.
The stated aim and purpose of this Society was to spread the knowledge of Christ throughout the world and to bring Christian principles to the heathen nations.
As they began to interact with the natives and teach them their own religious beliefs, they also taught them their own English ways and as a result, many of the natives began to identify closely with the missionaries and to desire to accept their culture and be a part of their society.

The LMS missionaries had a huge influence on the spread of their largely non-denominational approach to Christianity, throughout the world.
The missionaries were then instructed to become friendly with the natives, build a mission house for sleeping and worship, and learn the native language.
The natives saw this as retribution from the gods, and they were very suspicious of the crew.

Returning to China in 1826, he set himself to promote education and toprepare a Chinese commentary on the Bible and other Christian literature.
In the following year he offered his services to the London Missionary Society, and after he had attended David Bogues college at Gosport and studied Chinese under a native teacher, he was appointed to Canton in 1807.
After a year of much hardship he became translator to the East India Companys factory there in 1809, and worked at a Chinese Grammar and a translation of the New Testament, both published in 1814.

From 1841 to 1852, while a medical missionary for the London Missionary Society in what is now Botswana, he crossed the Kalahari desert and reached (1849) Lake Ngami.
Following the Zambezi River, he discovered and named Victoria Falls (1855) and reached the east coast at Quelimane, Portuguese East Africa (now Mozambique), in 1856.
Hoping to abolish the slave trade by opening Africa to Christian commerce and missionary stations, he traveled (1853) to Luanda on the west coast.
