Liturgical year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many Protestant churches recognize a liturgical year, including Anglicans/Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, the Reformed churches, and the United/Uniting churches (the United Church of Christ [USA], the United Church of Canada, and the Uniting Church in Australia).
The liturgical year, also known as the Christian year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons in some Christian churches which determines when Feasts, Memorials, Commemorations, and Solemnities are to be observed and which portions of Scripture are to be read.
The cycle of the year defines a series of seasons, which are associated with different ways of decorating churches, different vestments for clergy, and different topics for reading from the Bible and preaching.

 THE LITURGICAL YEAR
The liturgical feast of Christ's "manifestation" originated in the Orient, in Egypt, during the third century.
Pope Pius XII explains in "Mediator Dei": "The liturgical year devotedly fostered and accompanied by the Church, is not a cold and lifeless representation of the events of the past, or a simple and bare record of a former age.
Her feasts are not merely an historical commemoration of the life of Christ; they are not merely an example to inspire us--they are the re-living of the whole work of Christ on earth by His Mystical Body.

The Purpose of the Liturgical Year
In other words, the Liturgical Year is at one and the same time –the Church praying to God, the Church instructing the world, and the Church sanctifying her members.
The Liturgical Year unfolds in sequence, first, a panorama of the period of hopeful waiting for the coming of Christ, the promised Redeemer; then it presents the life of Christ in its historical development from His birth to His resurrection; and lastly, the continuation of His life work in the Church, His Mystical Body.
This homage and glory is rendered to God in the highest degree by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass – the chief act of Catholic worship and the very heart of the liturgy.

 About the Liturgical Calendar
The liturgical year is the temporal structure within which the Church celebrates the holy mysteries of Christ: "From the Incarnation and the Nativity to the Ascension, to Pentecost and to the wait in joyful hope for the Lord's coming" (109).
As defined by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Liturgical Year is "The celebration throughout the year of the mysteries of the Lord's birth, life, death, and Resurrection in such a way that the entire year becomes a 'year of the Lord's grace'.
Thus the cycle of the liturgical year and the great feasts constitute the basic rhythm of the Christian's life of prayer, with its focal point at Easter" (§1168).

The Catholic year (the "liturgical year") is made special by cycles of celebrations commemorating the lives of Jesus and His mother, the angels, and the legion of Saints who modelled lives of sanctity.
