Islam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Islam [▶] (Arabic: الإسلام al-islām) "the submission to God" is a monotheistic faith, one of the Abrahamic religions, the world's second-largest religion, and the fastest growing religion in the world.
As of January 1926, their final ruling on the matter of the origins of the Bahá'í Faith and its relationship to Islam was that the Bahá'í Faith was neither a sect of Islam, nor a religion based on Islam, but a clearly-defined, independently-founded faith.
Muslims hold that Islam is essentially the same belief as that of all the messengers sent by God to mankind since Adam, with the Qur'ān (the one definitive text of the Muslim faith) codifying the final revelation of God.

Liberal movements within Islam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liberals generally claim that they are returning to the principles of the early Muslim community, arguing that the medievalists have diverged from true Islam through their focus on the literal word rather than the ethical intent of scripture.
The liberal Muslim's focus on individual interpretation and ethics, rather than on the literal word of scripture, may have an antecedent in the Sufi tradition of Islamic mysticism.
Most liberal Muslims consequently do not believe in the authority of traditional scholars to issue a fatwa, since they generally favour the individual's ability to interpret Islamic sacred texts on their own.

Liberal Muslims believe that human beings are created free-a concept that is so important to highlight in the Muslim world today-and that if you take away or diminish freedom, you are in fact contradicting human nature as well as divine will.
This is in accordance with the basic teaching of the Qur'an that "there can be no compulsion in religion." Forcing religion on people contradicts a basic requirement of religion; that human beings are supposed to come to God of their own free will.
Islam has no clergy and no hierarchy, and therefore all Muslims must voice their opinion, in light of the teachings of Islam and the changing needs and priorities of society.

Why is Islam against ‘Roshan Khayali’?
In fact Islam was the first enlightened religion to appeal to the mind of man. The label enlightened has replaced ‘scientific’, ‘natural’ and ‘liberal’ because of their association with the West through of the works of some 19th century ‘reformist’ (jadeed) Muslim thinkers.
It was once called Islam reform, and was rejected, then it was called ‘modern’ Islam, and was rejected; and now ‘liberal’ Islam or ‘enlightened’ Islam is in the process of being rejected by the Muslims..
The 'liberal' secular rejection is delivered on the basis of President Musharraf's 'ambivalence' towards the religious parties and his crypto-fundamentalist army background.

Laith Kubba, "Islam and Liberal Democracy: Recognizing Pluralism
Although the meaning of Islam cannot be limited to the perceptions of Muslims or equated with their practices, neither can it be understood separately from these perceptions and practices.
Because Muslims often consider the early traditions of Islam to be part of the original message of revelation, they typically look to the way Muslims lived in the past rather than attempt to construct new ways based on both the original teachings of Islam and the realities of modern life.
Current controversies among both Muslims and Westerners about the relationship between Islam as a revealed scriptural religion and democracy as a specific form of modern government imply that Islam promotes a specific format for politics and government.

In my view liberal Islam means more than tolerant or moderate Islam; that is the reason why I cannot say in good faith that it exists already, or is imminent, somewhere in the Islamic world.
Islam, we are told, came to destroy age-old world empires, unjust and corrupt, and replace them with a free, egalitarian, God-fearing community (Umma).
It seems therefore that there is indeed a case for claiming that Islam cannot, in theory and in practice, coexist fully, harmoniously, with the laws of a modern nation-state.

Islam, Democracy, and the Rentier State (Print version)
Theological justifications for Islamic liberal democracy are often based on an interpretation of Shari'a, divine law for Muslims, which makes a distinction between the nature of Muhammad's early Meccan teachings and his later Medinan teachings.
In contrast, another proponent of liberal Islam, Egyptian Muhammad Khalaf-Allah (1916-1997), does not challenge the traditional Medinan interpretive emphasis but rather maintains that the principle of shura, or consultation, revealed in Mecca and Medina, essentially directs Muslims to practice democracy.
In fact, considering the breadth of the Islamic tradition, there is much evidence for the practical compatibility of Islamic principles and principles of liberal democracy.

The interpretations of Islam in this book, though prevalent throughout the Islamic world, are usually neglected in the spotlight, eclipsed by juicier portrayals of extremists as representative of all Islam.
