 The History of Tai Chi
These are the principal styles of Tai Chi that are in existence in the present day.
There were several other such forms being practiced in the eighth century (Heavenly-Inborn Style, Nine Small Heavens Style and Acquired Kung-fu) from which grew the origins of Tai Chi.
Whatever their respective contributions, from Chiang-Fa and the Chen villagers in Honan emerge all of the surviving branches of Tai Chi Chuan:

 Tai Chi Chuan
But Tai Chi Chuan exponents, in line with the Taoist reverence for life, usually stop short of this fatal move and let the opponent go, after demonstrating his combative superiority.
If a Tai Chi Chuan exponent has only internal force but no combat application, he may be able to give impressive demonstration of his power, such as taking punches without sustaining injury or sending a demonstration partner flying backward, but he would be unable to defend himself in a real fight.
At the first level Tai Chi Chuan promotes good health; at the intermediate level it is very effective for self defence, and at the highest level it leads to spiritual fulfilment.

 Tai Chi Chuan >> Information
Li made the first move and Chen parried, with one movement lifting Li some 30 centimeters off the ground and dashing him against a wall, at the same time breaking a picture, showering him in plaster dust, yet not injuring him at all.
The more romantic and mystical accounts date the beginnings of Tai Chi Chuan back as far as the I 5th, 12th or even the 8th century, the preferred version attributing it to a famous 15th century Taoist priest, Zhang Shanfeng.
Tai Chi Chuan was passed on to and refined by further generations of the Chen family but was not widely practiced outside the area of Chen's village until the early 19th century when Yang Luchan learned Chen style Tai Chi Chuan whilst employed in the Chen household.

This is perhaps the greatest advantage tai chi has over yoga.
Although the "chi" in tai chi chuan does not have the same meaning or Chinese character as the "chi" that means internal energy, many practitioners claim training in the art does enhance the flow of the vital stuff in a student's body.
To enhance the flow, tai chi chuan students should ensure their body is relaxed and their mind is quiet, and remain aware of the heaviness of the abdomen, Lee says.

languagehat.com: Comment on TAI VS THAI 2.
(Sorry, I'm not a linguist.) I believe the Tai group of language to be an old spoken language shared by a migratory group of people, (not nomads however, one thing they all have in common is that they all grew rice),and written forms were developed only recently like some 500-700 years ago.
If memory serves, either William J. Gedney or Li Fang Kuei made a conscious decision to spell the family "Tai" and the specific language "Thai," published it, and it stuck.
I would say standard Thai was the dialect of the larger Tai group of languages.
