Topic: Legalism (theology)

Legalism (theology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Legalism, in Christian theology, is a pejorative term referring to an improper fixation on law or codes of conduct, or legal ideas, usually implying an allegation of pride and the neglect of mercy, and ignorance of the grace of God.
In Protestant, Evangelical, Christian theology, especially in popular versions of the same, the charge of legalism is an accusation of ignorance of the Christian Gospel, or of unbelief.
In that context, to apply the criticism of legalism to a theological position or religious attitude, implies that the accused has over-turned the Gospel of salvation through faith and new life in Jesus Christ, and has substituted some principle of personal merit or ritual purity for the unearned grace of God.

Oneness theology denies the Trinity and teaches that God is a single person who was "manifested as Father in creation and as the Father of the Son, in the Son for our redemption, and as the Holy Spirit in our regeneration."
Oneness Pentecostal theology affirms that there exists only one God in all the universe.
Oneness churches also teach that speaking in tongues is a necessary manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

 Theology Today - Vol 37, No. 1 - April 1980 - TABLETALK - Theological Labels
It is a theology which is chiefly concerned with the providential care and rule of God in the lives of men and women, as they face the vicissitudes of everyday existence, rather than with the message of salvation for those caught in the crisis of sin and guilt.
It is a theology that seeks to articulate faith in a manner applicable to the universal human situation and consonant with knowledge gathered from reflection on human experience of life.
The Lundensian theology took its name from the theology taught at the University of Lund in Sweden by Nygren and Aulen, who sought a way of conserving the distinctive motifs of Christian faith, such as grace and love, without isolating theology from religion and philosophy in the manner of Barth.

The argument that the older view of Judaism was unduly influenced by the theological debates of the sixteenth century is a double-edged sword.
What is often not appreciated, however, is that this kind of legalism might be a perfectly acceptable viewpoint so far as some branches of Second Temple Judaism are concerned, just as it is acceptable to some branches of the historic Christian church.
Even though definitions of “legalism” vary, Sanders analysis of Second Temple Judaism assumes that legalism is any view that bases Israel’s relationship with God upon the moral achievements of the covenant people.

From this perspective the strictly legal parts of the Old Testament stand in a narrative setting whose design is to recount God's dealings with his people so as to give them Torah or instruction in the way of life he desires for them.
In short, the law is part of the covenant, and constitutes both God's gracious gift to his people and the vehicle of their grateful response to him (Exod 19:3-6; Deut 7:1-16; 26:1-19).
The problem of legalism arose in sharp form when the gospel crossed the boundaries of Judaism and penetrated the Gentile world.

 Adventist Review: Title
Legalism and liberalism are both problems in our church and in our own lives.
It seems to me that one could be a liberal legalist-as in applying a liberal interpretation of God's law and using that as the central motivation for life-more easily than one could have a growing appreciation and understanding of God's grace and continue to disregard or diminish God's laws for how we should live.
t first glance it looked like a reasonable question: "Which do you think is a bigger problem in the church today: legalism or liberalism?" Perhaps it's even a question we might be tempted to ask ourselves as we try to find a balance in our Christian experience and involvement in church discussions.

 Essay 4: Church History
Consistent with the development of old covenant legalism in theology was an increasing use of the old covenant terms and institutions to define the Christian offices and institutions, especially during the third century.
During that period, we see the development of old covenant "priests" in their vestments, gathering around "altars" within increasingly elaborate church temples to offer a "sacrifice" (first of bread and wine, later of the body and blood of Christ).
Good works and orthodoxy of beliefs slowly tended to become conceived as causes of divine approval rather than (1) as grateful responses to a prior approval granted to faith, and (2) as fruits of a personally-experienced Spirit to Whom credit would then naturally be given.

He can't simply admit that legalism is merely one of the church's current problems; he maintains without any inspired authority that all the church's problems are manifestations of legalism.
Venden's theology has facilitated the capacity of Adventists to assume the possibility of an encounter with God not contained or defined by the doctrinal and moral parameters of Scripture.
Yet the fundamental errors of Morris Venden's salvation theology and his view of the church's spiritual priorities continue to prevent clarity of understanding among many contemporary Adventists, and bear perhaps a larger blame even than the teachings of Desmond Ford for the spiritual state of the modern Seventh-day Adventist Church.

On the other hand, the material principle of a "liberal" theology is rationalism, for "liberals" interpret the Bible to agree with their own opinions.
