Epiphany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Spain, Cuba and some Latin American countries Epiphany day is called El Día de Reyes (Kings' Day, as the Magi are known as the Los Tres Reyes Magos) or Pascua de Negros (Blackmen Christmas).
The feast was initially based on, and viewed as a fulfillment of, the Jewish Feast of Lights.
The observance had its origins in the eastern Christian churches, and included the birth of Jesus; the visit of the three Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) who arrived in Bethlehem; and all of Jesus' childhood events, up to his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist.

PUERTO RICO HERALD: Christmas Lives On for Latinos…Puerto Rican Community Celebrates A Special Day… Thrilling For Children
Today is Three Kings Day - the Feast of the Epiphany - the day when Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthasar bring gifts for the children of Latin America and Spain, as they did for Jesus in Bethlehem.
Three Kings Day actually falls every Jan. 6 and is a national holiday in many Latin American nations such as Mexico and Guatemala.
Depending on the country or community where this holiday is celebrated, the Three Kings could leave the gifts under the beds, by the manger, or next to a pair of shoes containing a letter with a wish list.

 The Epiphany Season
In Hispanic and Latin culture, as well as some places in Europe, it is known as Three Kings’ Day (Span: el Dia de los Tres Reyes, la Fiesta de Reyes, or el Dia de los Reyes Magos; Dutch: Driekoningendag).
In some Central and South American countries influenced by Catholic tradition, Three Kings’ Day, or the night before, is the time for opening Christmas presents.
The Wise Men or Magi who brought gifts to the infant Jesus were the first Gentiles to acknowledge Jesus as "King" and so were the first to "show" or "reveal" Jesus to a wider world as the incarnate Christ.

Press Release Archives - MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI CELEBRATES THREE KINGS DAY
MAYOR RUDOLPH W. Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today hosted a reception at Gracie Mansion to celebrate Three Kings Day, the Latin American celebration of Spanish origin that remembers the three Biblical Wise Men -- Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar -- who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus in Bethlehem.
"Three Kings Day continues to be one of the most important celebrations in Spain and Latin America.
Traditionally, tonight, on the eve of the Three Kings arrival to Bethlehem, children put grass and water under their beds in a welcoming gesture to the Kings' camels and hoping that the Three Kings will be generous in bringing them gifts," said Mayor Giuliani.

Pride and Tradition on Three Kings Day
In New York and in other cities around the U.S., we will see Three Kings Day parades, with Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar trudging not through the sand of Jerusalem or Latin America but through the rain and snow of North America in winter.
For we believe that 12 days after the birth of Christ, on the 6thof January, three great kings arrived to pay their respects to the baby Jesus.
But Christianity took hold, and the tradition of Three Kings Day endured and became a symbol of our culture and faith.

"New Yorkers who aren't from Latin America might learn, for instance, that in anticipation of Three Kings Day, children put grass and water under their beds the night before to welcome the camels, in the hopes that the Three Kings will be generous.
"Three Kings Day is of central importance in Latin America and, by extension, to the many New Yorkers from these parts of the world, most of whom now celebrate Three Kings Day along with Christmas," said Mayor Giuliani.
We should all let the reverence and splendor of the Three Kings, and the love that this holiday symbolizes, carry over into the rest of 1998, and beyond," the Mayor concluded.
