 Knights Templar
The Templars and the Hospitalers became essential for the defense of the Christian crusader states of the Holy Land, and the pilgrim routes.
It has been claimed that the Templars were the custodians of The Shroud of Turin, The Holy Grail, and The Ark of the Covenant.
The Knights Templar were founded by a small number of French knights who wanted to devote themselves to the protecting pilgrims en route to the Holy Land, and who wanted to form a religious community with that aim.

Secret connections were made with the Muslim equivalent of the Templars, the Hashishim or Assassins, a sect of fanatical militant adepts; rumors had it that the Hashishim were in the employ of the Templars.
The shroud of mystery around the Templars and their exploits, and subsequent survival, has led to a plethora of legends, folk-tales and romanticized versions of their story being told over the years.
However, given their avowed nature as Soldiers of Christ (many of whom had died defending Christianity in the Crusades), the most unlikely charge leveled at the Templars was that they had ritually denied Christ, repudiating, trampling and splitting on the Holy Cross.
