 Encyclopedia: International Churches of Christ
Kip McKean was an influential leader in the early days of the International Churches of Christ.
In 1981, McKean and the church began to fulfill a "vision" of organizing churches in key world metropolitan centers, especially those with populations greater than 100,000.
The history of the International Churches of Christ begins in 1979, when Kip McKean led 29 would-be-disciples into what became known as the Boston Church of Christ.

 International Church of Christ History
Kip McKean, founder of the Boston Church of Christ, is a student at the University of Florida at Gainesville.
The Crossroads Church converted and trained minister, Kip McKean, is hired by the Lexington Church of Christ.
The elders of Memorial Church of Christ accuse McKean of bringing "unbiblical practices, peculiar languages and subtle, deceitful doctrines to Charleston from the Crossroads Church in Gainesville." Financial support is withdrawn.

Reachout Trust - The Boston Movement - ICC - International Churches of Christ
Kip McKean had run the church with a rule of authority that in the end led to his downfall.
When Kip McKean resigned as the British leader of the Boston Movement or International Churches of Christ (ICC), as they are better known, last autumn, there was much speculation as to whether changes would take place in the movement or not.
It was also McKean who preached that ICC was the only true church.

 Cult News.com: "Cult" leader resigns
Kip McKean was once proclaimed as "The greatest living treasure that God has given the kingdom on the face of the earth," now he seems little more than a former king who either abdicated or was deposed.
McKean's "International Church of Christ" grew from only a handful of devoted followers in the late 70s, to more than 100,000 within "170 nations," according to its former head.
It is unclear how McKean will continue to maintain his relatively lavish lifestyle, which has included a $500,000 condo in an exclusive gated community within Pacific Palisades owned by the church, expensive schools for his children and other perks.

McKean’s resignation on 6 November 2002 followed a yearlong sabbatical from his duties as ICOC World Missions evangelist and leader of the World Sector Leaders of the International Churches of Christ.
Kip McKean may well become the leader of this group because they will perceive him to be the only one able to reconstruct the ICOC.” Watchman Fellowship’s Walker shares his concern: “Even if there are social reformations, I am concerned that the underlying doctrinal problems will remain.
Despite McKean’s seemingly humbling tumble from on high, there is no indication that he has revised any of his teachings or beliefs, including one of the most important ICOC tenets, that the ICOC is God’s movement for today, and that only its members are true Christians.

History Repeats Itself: Kip McKean & Chuck Lucas
While Chuck was the pioneer of this faith, Kip was its perfector.
At this point in the evolution in the movement, Kip McKean had become more than just an up-and-comer within the mainline Churches of Christ (which his "Boston Movement" was still a part of); the growth of his ministry had surpassed Lucas' and he was clearly bucking for Chuck's position as "father" of the movement.
McKean himself acknowledges his debt to Lucas and Crossroads in a letter addressed to the Elders, Evangelists, Deacons, and members of the Crossroads Church of Christ:

 SALVATION BOSTON STYLE
Kip McKean and the others were not disciples at the time they started the movement and didn’t have a discipler over them.
Kip McKean pointed out in 1982 that the nine “Bible studies” he had written earlier, what he calls the “first principles,” taught that one had to be a disciple before one could be baptized.
These are the words of Kip McKean, leader of the Boston Church of Christ, now known as the International Churches of Christ (hereafter, ICC).

 Revolution through restoration
McKean claims the Boston church is the Jerusalem for God’s modern day movement.
This is why McKean says, "Today we are calling out of the world, calling out of denominations, out of mainline churches, out of campus ministries, all of the people who desire to be part of God’s restored true church and movement" (pg.
McKean stated that, "Those who came along later turned back in bitterness because of the hard teachings they could not accept".

 The Love Bombers
McKean's Crossroads beliefs again came into conflict with traditional Church of Christ ways when he became a minister in 1976 of the Charleston, IL, Church of Christ.
In a 1992 ICC publication, an indignant McKean responded to the split, claiming the break was caused not by theological differences but by "jealousy over our growth, which exposed their lack of growth." The name "International Churches of Christ" was officially adopted by the Boston Movement churches in the early '90s.
The lead minister at the church chastised McKean for his "narrow view of the Bible" and later fired him for using authoritarian methods.

A Response to Kip McKean's Recent Letter(West Region)
Likewise, Kip's continual reference to the ICOC being the only modern day movement of God, the one true church, and the Kingdom of God on earth, would put all persons who are not members of the ICOC outside the Kingdom of God.
By his use of Scripture verses, Kip continues to infer that all who disagree with ICOC leadership (the "central leadership of the Kingdom") or who stand in opposition to them and their practices are "Korah-like grumblers" who disagree with and stand in opposition to God, Himself.
Here Kip is implying that his use of the phrase "movement of God" was misunderstood and that it is his belief that people can be part of a fellowship, a group which is not growing numerically or geographically, and still be saved disciples.

WWW.ICOCNEWS.COM Unofficial News About the International Church of Christ - Response to ''From Babylon to Zion'' from ...
What Kip McKean attempts to portray as a "crumbling wall" are these individual congregations of the ICC candidly speaking of their problems and striving to recover from the years of damage of this system.
From what he has written, the extent of his perception of the harm is related to "roll-backs" of the ICC structure, such as 1) full-time ministers being accountable to their church's memberships and some leaving the ministry, and 2) the removal of a top-heavy hierarchy that he has confused with the Kingdom of God.
It is no surprise that McKean has nothing new to offer to help the churches at this time; he is sowing the same old "seed" and using the same old inexpensive materials.

my brain hurts--The International Churches of Christ, a Biblical and Critical Evaluation
McKean has discarded the doctrine of salvation in which faith in Jesus Christ is sufficient for one in which a conscious baptism as a disciple of Jesus is necessary.
McKean’s rationale is that he had reinstituted the true teaching of the early church: “True restorations occurred as first-century Bible doctrines were once more rediscovered: like Jesus baptizing only people who have made the decision to be disciples.”
And since McKean is revered as a virtual prophet (despite claims of the opposite), his word or interpretation becomes truth.

The decision of the elder's son, however, was not interpreted in the same manner by Kip McKean and the ICC leadership, and illustrated the group's honest assessment of other churches or Christian groups.
Not knowing the true extent of his sexual sins, she had assumed that we had been harsh and unforgiving towards him by firing him at Crossroads.
To my mind, I would think a group that refuses to accept that it has serious disagreements and refuses to meet to discuss them would cause more people to "question their faith" than the meeting I was proposing.

 True Church Restored
In verse 13 Paul states, "Is Christ divided?" Paul recognized that one did not have to be part of their particular church to be part of the body.
By claiming their teacher has restored the true church and the true Gospel their movement has become the catalyst for dividing the church which has already existed.

Kip McKean resigns as head of ICOC - The Christian Chronicle
The omission was but a reflection of a schism several years old between the mainstream fellowship and discipling churches, often accused of overly-agressive discipling techniques and of being, or bordering on being, a cult.
In his resignation McKean said, “God through His Word, through circumstances and through true brothers has made it clear that my leadership in recent years has damaged both the Kingdom and my family.
It was a painful parting of the ways many church members remember well, when in 1994 the directory “Churches of Christ in the United States” did not list those churches associated with the group then-widely known as the Boston Movement, headed by charismatic leader Kip McKean.

The "International Church of Christ," has often been called a "cult." The group was founded by Kip McKean in the Boston area of New England, but quickly spread to old England as well.
In the United States and around the world Kip McKean's "International Church of Christ" has received perhaps more bad press than any other group called a "cult," with the possible exception of Scientology.
Whatever the "politically correct" description is for this "new religious movement," it has apparently hurt many participants.

McKean said at a July 2000 church conference: "I am convinced, when a teen falls away, when a teen is not baptized, there are some sinful dynamics in that family, and that family, that mom and dad, need to repent." The next year, McKean announced his sabbatical because of "shortcomings in [his] marriage and family."
Kip McKean, founder of the controversial International Churches of Christ (icoc), announced his resignation in a November 6 letter, citing his own arrogance and family problems.
McKean also said he was guilty of "always thinking I am right, not listening to the counsel of my brothers, and not seeking discipling for my life, ministry and family."

International Church of Christ: A Cult in Disguise
The church was founded in 1979 in Boston, USA, by breakaway preacher Kip McKean, and practises an extreme form of Christianity based on its rigid interpretation of the Bible, with followers believing that they are the only ones who will achieve true salvation.
The church, now run from Los Angeles, is disavowed by the traditional, mainline Churches of Christ that have existed for some 200 years.
They and others whose lives have been wrecked by it have many, many questions to ask McKean - questions that will probably never be answered by this spiritual Pied Piper and his self-proclaimed "true church."
