 The Spears of Hozoin
The Hozoin was consecrated to the Kegon sect of Buddhism.
Kegon sprouted at almost exactly the same time another school of Chinese Buddhism came into prominence, the Chan or Zen sect, and in many ways, Kegon was an intellectual approach to Buddhism, complementing the more spontaneous methods of Zen.
It was one dedicated to the Kegon sect of Buddhism, which accounted for the statue of Tojun, known in China as To-shun, one of the religion's primogenitors.

Buddhism in Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By 627 there were 46 Buddhist temples, 816 Buddhist priests, and 569 Buddhist nuns in Japan.
Note that Zen influences are identifiable earlier in Japanese Buddhism, esp. cross-fertilization with Hosso and Kegon, but the independent schools were formed quite late.
There were traditionally six schools of Buddhism in Nara Japan: Ritsu (Vinaya), Jojitsu (Satyasiddhi), Kusha (Abhidharma) Sanron (Madhyamika), Hosso (Yogacara), and Kegon (Hua-yen).

Major monastery-temple belonging to the Kegon sect of Buddhism.
But among sects of esoteric Buddhism, especially the Shingon sect, Birushana is known as Dainichi Nyorai.
The image embodied the Buddha Birushana (Skt: Vairocana), who was regarded by the Kegon sect as the cosmic, central Buddha.

First, because they teach that the Ten Worlds are separate from one another, they fail to move beyond the provisional doctrines and to reveal the doctrine of the three thousand realms in a single moment of life as it is expounded in the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra.

Kegon --  Britannica Concise Encyclopedia - Your gateway to all Britannica has to offer!
Kegon taught that all living things are interdependent and that the universe is self-creating, with Vairocana at its centre.
The name Kegon (meaning “flower ornament”) is a translation of the Sanskrit avatamsaka, after the school's chief text, the Avatamsaka-sutra, which deals with the buddha Vairocana.
Though the Kegon school is no longer an active faith teaching a separate doctrine, it continues to administer the famous Todai Temple monastery at Nara.

Kegon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kegon ([kegõɴ], or in some dialects, [keŋõɴ]) is the name of the Japanese transmission of the Huayan school of Chinese Buddhism, via the Korean Hwaeom tradition.
When the construction of Tōdaiji was completed, Rōben entered that temple to formally initiate Kegon as a field of study in Japanese Buddhism, and Kegon-shū would become known as one of the "six Nara (奈良) schools".
Kegon thought was later be popularized in Japan by Myoe (明惠), who combined its doctrines with those of Vajrayana and Gyonen (凝然), who is most responsible for the establishment of the Tōdaiji lineage of Kegon.

The Buddha of the Kegon Sutra is Vairochana Buddha.
Similarly, even the Buddha who appears in the Kegon Sutra is not the Buddha of the perfect teaching,
Ch'eng-kuan took the doctrine of ichinen sanzen and read it into the passage in the Kegon Sutra: "The mind is like a skilled painter." He went so far as to assert that the doctrine of ichinen sanzen was also revealed in the Kegon Sutra, the basic scripture of his own school.

 The Opening of the Eyes
The four sects of Kegon, Shingon, Sanron and Hosso are all Mahayana schools of Buddhism.
The Kegon and Shingon sects look down upon Shakyamuni Buddha and declare the Buddha Vairochana and the Buddha Mahavairochana to be their respective objects of worship.
But now it becomes apparent that Vairochana Buddha, who is described in the Kegon Sutra as being seated on a lotus pedestal, and the various Buddhas who appear in the sutras of the Hodo and Hannya periods, such as the Dainichi Sutra, are all in fact followers of Shakyamuni Buddha.

 Nara Buddhism
For example, the Sanron school was led in Nara by a Korean monk and took as its basic scriptures the same three Madhyamaka texts (Middle Treatise, Hundred Treatise, Twelve-Topic Treatise) as the 'Three Treatises' school in China and Korea of which it formed a part.
The six schools of Nara Buddhism, introduced into Japan during the seventh and eighth centuries CE were Hosso (= Mind-Only, Yogacara); Sanron (= Three Treatises, Madhyamika), Kegon (Flower-Garland, Avatamsaka); Ritsu (= Rules of Discipline, Vinaya); Jojitsu (= Establishment of truth, Satyasiddhi); and Kusha (study of the Abhidharma-kosha texts).
The Nara schools have been well described a 'islands of Buddhism' in early Japan.

Once I had understood this and prepared to cease deferring to my parents and teachers and instead to delve into the truths of Buddhism, I found that there are ten bright mirrors that reflect the sacred doctrines of the Buddha's lifetime of teachings.
These men taught that, whatever the relative merits of the Kegon, Jimmitsu, Hannya, Nirvana and Lotus sutras might be, they were all exoteric teachings, the various preachings of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Shortly afterwards they joined in the feast for Kegon, all except Sullivan who stayed in the church and was unsure of what to make of the party’s alliance with the ogres, and celebrated in his becoming an adult with roast pig.
They were not picky when it came to the horses and instead of Methrian’s “Old Expendable” the horse was actually Sullivan’s, although the knight remained in the church during the entire proceeding and continued to alternate between methodically cleaning the statues while mumbling and devout prayer.
Wreggar spoke to their leader, a half-orc woman whom Toryx recognized as Sureka (now Visioneer Sureka-Thul, according to Kegon’s translation of the conversation, which occurred in Giant-speak), and gave the newcomers a place to stay.

This revival consisted of criticism of the exclusivist doctrines of the Pure Land and Nichiren sects and a renewed interest in, and devotion to, the historic Buddha, Śākyamuni.
Following this transmission, which centered around an eighteen-part Tantric sādhana to be undertaken by new initiates, Kōben began the cultivation of the butsugen ritual, a ritual centered on a visualization of the eyes of the Buddha, and his biography records that he experienced many miracles due to this practice.
Later, returning to Mount Takao, Kōben began the teaching of the Kegon doctrines, lecturing on the Kegon tangenki (Chin., Huayan tanxuan ji), a major Huayan commentary composed by Fazang.

On the one hand, the translation of the Buddhist sutras stimulated Chinese thinkers and led them to interpret the teachings of the Indian Buddha in the light of their own philosophies.
Thus arose an immensely fruitful exchange of ideas which culminated in the Hua-yen (Sanskrit: Avatamsaka) school of Buddhism in China and in the Kegon school in Japan.
Zen is thus a unique blend of the philosophies and idiosyncrasies of three different cultures.
