 Keim, Karl Theodor
KEIL, JOHANN FRIEDRICH KARL: German Protestant exegete; b.
His special effort was to explain the development of the Christian Church from its apostolic origin up to its conquest over the old faith and the military power of the Roman Empire, and to give a scientific representation of the historic origin of our faith, the history of Jesus.
He rejected the fourth Gospel; among the synoptic Gospels he gave the preference to Matthew, which, according to him, originated as early as 68 and is distinguished by primitive simplicity and absence of preconceived notions, showing only slight traces of revision.

For Emil Brunner the Resurrection is not an event that "can be fitted into the succession of historical events"; it is a fact only if it has taken place "for us." Karl Barth is more positive though still ambiguous in affirming that the Resurrection is a real event though inaccessible to historical investigation.
In a more positive vein, Theodor Keim in his work on Jesus (1867-72) proposed that the basis of the Easter faith resulted from God-given "telegrams from heaven."
According to Bultmann's thinking, "Jesus ist auferstanden ins Kerygma"-Jesus arose in the faith and the preaching of the disciples.

 Resurrection
The theologians in this second group have usually been influenced by Soren Kierkegaard and more recently by Karl Barth, who held that the resurrection may be accepted by faith as a literal event, but that it cannot be ascertained by any historical investigation.
For instance, in the nineteenth century David Strauss disarmed the swoon theory while Theodor Keim and others pointed out the weaknesses in the hallucination theory.
Yet while the naturalistic theories are usually rejected, this group still insists that the event can be known only by faith completely apart from any verification.

Karl Theodor Keim was born in 1825 at Stuttgart, was Repetent at Tiibingen from 1851 to 1855, and after he had been five years in the ministry, became Professor at Zurich in 1860.
It is taken for granted in the Life of Jesus by Karl Wittichen (Jena, 1876, 397 pp.), which might be reckoned one of the most clearly conceived works of this kind based on the Marcan hypothesis if its arrangement were not so bad.
Keim however, himself in the end allows the spiritual elements practically to cancel the eschatological.

In 1787 he apparently receded from the schismatic position of the Punctuation of Ems and applied to Rome for a renewal of his quinquennial faculties and for the approbation of his new coadjutor, Karl Theodor von Dalberg.
On 18 July, 1774, he succeeded the deceased von Breidbach-Burresheim as Elector and Archbishop of Mainz and eight days later as Prince-Bishop of Worms.
He was ordained priest on 11 Sept., 1774, and received episcopal consecration the following year on 14 May. At the beginning of his reign it appeared as if he would try to stem the tide of rationalism which had swept over the Church of Mainz during the weak rule of von Breidbach-Burresheim.

If inconsistencies are ground for scornful rejection, then it will fare ill with the New Testament accounts of the resurrection.
