 Kalevala
At yet another level, all fifty cantos of Kalevala can be seen to allegorise in their account of the growing prosperity of Väinämöinen and his people the significance of a cultural tradition as a means of defining and holding together a national group.
Kalevala, however imperfectly its nature and significance were understood, also became and remains for many people around the world a symbol of Finland.
The influence of Kalevala on Sibelius at the turn of the century has done much to establish a symbolic association of Kalevala with Finland in the minds of many people in the English speaking world.
