Topic: Kalam

Eternity and Time in William Lane Craig’s Kalam Cosmological Argument
In Arabic scholastic useage, kalam referred to specific theological or apologetical discourse involving proofs for the existence of God, God& justice and mercy, or doctrinal interpretations from the Qur&.
Thus, the modern version of the kalam cosmological argument is (1) everything that begins to exist has a cause of its existence; (2) the universe began to exist; therefore (3) the universe has a cause of its existence (1979, 63).
His modern version of the kalam cosmological argument—first formulated by the Mutakallimun, the Muslim scholastics of the ninth century—rests on empirical arguments as well as a priori considerations that an actual infinite is impossible.

 Definition of Abdul Kalam
It is believed that he reads both the Qur'an (the main holy text of his family's faith, Islam) and the Bhagavad Gita (the main holy text of India's majority religion, Hinduism), and many hope that he will be able to heal recent religious factionalism in India (especially in Gujarat).
Kalam acknowledged in many places that he is following Tirukkural; in most of his speeches, he quotes at least one kural.

Dissapointed at his rejection by the IAF, Kalam visited Rishikesh where he bathed in the Ganga and met Swami Sivananda — "a man who looked like Buddha".
He calls it "the second vision of the nation" and says he wants to focus on the children of India to ignite in their minds a love for science and the nation's mission: a developed India.

Kalam, at 71, would have witnessed Tamil Nadu’s zealous non-brahmin movement (1920s to 1950s) and the subsequent rule of the shudras by the DMK.
According to Naqvi, “Kalam, for all his devotion to Rama, still has to catch up with Abdul Rahim Khan-e-Khana’s verses in Sanskrit to Dasarath’s son”.
It takes a Kalam who renounces his caste, rejects his religion, embraces the sanathan dharm, denies the social realities of the nation, and cultivates a militant patriotism, to become the head of state.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam: Self-Made Bomb Maker
Kalam, 66, has never hidden the passion for a powerful India that has driven him since he was growing up in a poor family on the coast of Tamil Nadu.
Some accounts have said that Kalam's affection for Hinduism developed when a primary-school teacher separated him as a Muslim and placed him at the back of a classroom, prompting tears from a Brahmin boy who was his best friend.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on Oct. 15, 1931, on Dhanushkodi, an island off Tamil Nadu, where his father rented a boat to fishermen who worked the narrow strait between India and what was then Ceylon, now Sri Lanka.

Professor William Craig's Criticisms of Critiques of Kalam Cosmological Arguments
We may suppose that the standard form for kalam cosmological arguments is as follows: Whatever begins to exist has a cause; the universe began to exist; therefore the universe has a cause.
And it is also unclear to me why even theists should grant that the premises have the status which this interpretation requires; surely sinless belief in God could perfectly well go along with rejection of Craig's controversial physical and metaphysical premises.
Of course, this is not to say that Davies, Hawking and Grünbaum offer compelling reasons for Craig to give up his belief that kalam cosmological arguments are sound--but it is important to see that this is an entirely separate issue.

A critique of the kalam argument
Craig believes, not only that the kalam argument establishes that the universe has a cause, but also that there is a strong argument for the saying that this cause must be a person.
I shall be particularly concerned with the cogency of the causal principle on which the argument rests ("Whatever begins to exist must have a cause"), with the relation that is alleged to hold between the First Cause and the universe, and with the implications for the nature of the First Cause.

 An Introduction to 'Ilm al-Kalam
Kalam, in the sense of logical and rational argument about the principal doctrines of Islam, has a special and distinguished place in the Shi'ah tradition.
The 'aqli part of kalam consists of the material which is purely rational, and if there is any reference to naqli (tradition), it is for the sake of illumination and confirmation of a rational judgement.
The difference in matters of kalam causes disunity in their Islamic outlook, and the disagreement in the matter of fiqh deprives them of the unity of action.

Classical Islamic Arguments for the Existence of God
The former laid special emphasis on the argument from contingency in a manner which definitely influenced the later Mutakallims; the later showed definite predilection for the teleological argument (dalil al-‘inayah) which had a basis in the Qur’an,[14] and was of a more compelling nature than the other arguments, according to him.
The Traditional argument of Kalam presupposes a preliminary thesis upon which the theological treatises place a considerable emphasis: the thesis of the newness or temporality of the universe (al-huduth).
Prior to the rise of the Mu‘tazilah, who initiated the whole current of scholastic theology (kalam) in Islam, of course, the question of the demonstrability of God& existence, like the remaining questions of rational theology, could hardly arise.

Note especially the phrase "when one goes back to the real time in which we live." This is a remarkable scientific confirmation of what kalam philosophers have been saying for a long time and what mathematicians such as Cantor and Hilbert confirm: the actual infinite cannot exist.
The Arabic word kalam means "speech," but more broadly it means "natural theology" or "philosophical theism" (Craig, Kalam, 4).

 Kalam
Henceforth in all the great figures in kalam disputation one can see clearly what was only implicit in Juvayni: to the extent that they took kalam seriously at all, it was in the form of modifying the conclusions of Falsafah so as to bring its analyses into accord with Islamic community loyalties.
The original Mu'tazili school of kalam continued to be represented both among Jama'i-Sunnis and especially among Twelver Shi'is, and made progress even outside Islam: many Jewish scholars professed a kalam that was Mu'tazili in substance.
The Seljukid Toghril-beg's vizier, al-Kunduri, ordered that all Mu'tazili teaching (in which he included other kalam as well) cease, and Juvayni had to leave home; but in Mecca and Medina, where he took refuge, he gained such a name-though still in his twenties-that his followers subsequently called him 'imam of the two holy cities', Imam-al-Haramayn.

Graham Oppy on the Kalam Cosmological Argument
Mackie is merely reiterating a traditional objection to the kalam argument which states that although an infinite series cannot be formed by beginning at a point and successively adding to it, an infinite past does not involve a beginning point and so evades the thrust of the argument.
93-95; a refutation of the argument in William Lane Craig, The Kalam Cosmological Argument, Library of Philosophy and Religion (London: Macmillan, 1979).
In short, it seems to me that Mackie's objections to the second premiss of the kalam cosmological argument are unsound and that Oppy's attempt to reinstate them is no more successful than Mackie's original statement of them.

A Swift and Simple Refutation of the Kalam Cosmological Argument?
In short, while the kalam cosmological argument enjoys the enormous heuristic advantage of being formulable in a simple syllogism, so that it can be easily communicated to a philosophically or scientifically untutored person, it is by no means simplistic and cannot be defeated by swift and simple objections.
I take this to be an enormous concession to the practitioner of kalam and to the power of his argument.
The defender of the kalam cosmological argument seems to be on secure ground in appropriating the Big Bang theory as empirical confirmation of the beginning of the universe.

The 10th-century school of Ash'ariyyah moved kalam back toward traditional faith, accepting, for example, the eternal, uncreated nature of the Qur'an and its literal truth.
The most prominent early school was the 8th-century Mu'tazilah, which asserted the supremacy of reason, championed free will, and rejected an anthropomorphic characterization of God.
It arose during the Umayyad dynasty over varying interpretations of the Qur'an and over questions the Qur'an provoked, including those on predestination, free will, and the nature of God.
