Pope John Paul II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Paul II was a conservative on doctrine and issues relating to reproduction and the ordination of women.
John Paul II emphasized what he called the "universal call to holiness" and attempted to define the Catholic Church's role in the modern world.
In addition, John Paul II chose not to do away with the discipline of mandatory priestly celibacy, though he did encourage married clergymen of other Christian traditions who later became Catholic to be ordained as Catholic priests.

Pope John Paul I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Paul I intended to prepare an encyclical in order to confirm the lines of the Second Vatican Council ("an extraordinary long-range historical event and of growth for the Church", he said) and to enforce the Church's discipline in the life of priests and the faithful.
Pope John Paul I was not in office long enough to make any major practical changes within the Vatican or the Roman Catholic Church (except for his abandonment of the Papal Coronation).
In fact, he was reported to have told them in the Conclave, "May God forgive you for what you have done on my behalf", with the smile that became his trademark; he also strongly suggested to his aides and staff that he believed he was unfit to be pope.

John Paul II and the Crisis of Humanism
John Paul II emerged from the heart of the Church and the priesthood, and he cannot be understood apart from that.
John Paul II’s "theology of the body," which he laid out in 130 general audience addresses between 1979 and 1984, is arguably the most creative Christian response to the sexual revolution and its "pulverization" of the human person to be articulated in the twentieth century.
John Paul even goes so far as to propose that sexual love within the bond of marital fidelity is an icon of the interior life of God the Holy Trinity, a community of mutual self—donation and mutual receptivity.

CBC News Indepth: POPE JOHN PAUL II
John Paul tried to reconcile Christians and Jews, and the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
In a 1993 letter to his bishops, John Paul said both sex before marriage and contraception were intrinsically evil.

Papal Transition: On papal conclave & election of the next pope by Thomas J. Reese, S.J.
John Paul II again ignored church rules and raised the number of cardinal electors to 135 on Oct. 21, 2003, as he did in 2001.
In appointing cardinals, John Paul II has done what anyone would do if they were pope--he has appointed men who agree with him on the major issues that face the church.
John Paul II sees the papacy not just as a job but as a vocation or mission from God.

 John Paul II
John Paul pursued ecumenism (primarily with the Anglican Communion and Orthodox churches), although he was unsuccessful in arranging a visit to Russia, and took various steps to improve relations with Jews, including Vatican recognition of Israel and acknowledgment of Catholic failures in responding to the
A charismatic, forceful, and multilingual man whose own faith was marked by deep piety and mysticism, John Paul II humanized the papacy and managed to connect personally with the many thousands that gathered whenever he visited a foreign land.

Patron Saints Index: Pope John Paul II
O Blessed Trinity, we thank you for having graced the church with Pope John Paul II and for allowing the tenderness of your fatherly care, the glory of the cross of Christ, and the splendor of the Holy Spirit, to shine through him.
For many years Karol believed God was calling him to the priesthood, and after two near fatal accidents, he responded to God's call.
Trusting fully in your infinite mercy and in the maternal intercession of Mary, he has given us a living image of Jesus the Good Shepherd, and has shown us that holiness is the necessary measure of ordinary Christian life and is the way of achieving eternal communion with you.

MAN OF 1994: Pope John Paul II
Paul in I Corinthians declares, "Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!" Despite his belief in the redemptive power of human suffering, John Paul feels deep personal anguish at the conflicts that have devastated the peoples of Rwanda and Bosnia.
John Paul's dissatisfaction with some of the church's traditional priestly operatives - like the Jesuits, whom he perceived until recently as becoming too liberal - has led him to encourage lay Catholic movements such as Opus Dei.
In his homeland, John Paul is still regarded as a kind of uncrowned king.

The Liberalism of John Paul II
Nor does the Church close her eyes to the danger of fanaticism or fundamentalism among those who, in the name of an ideology which purports to be scientific or religious, claim the right to impose on others their own concept of what is true and good.
In one of the most suggestive passages of the encyclical, John Paul writes, "At the heart of every culture lies the attitude a person takes to the greatest mystery: the mystery of God.
John Paul recognizes how widespread that misunderstanding is, and therefore immediately follows the above passage with this:

Pope John Paul II and Evangelicals
I hope it demonstrated to the worlds within worlds of evangelical Protestantism that the Catholic Church is a vibrantly evangelical Church, committed to bearing witness to Christ and preaching Christ on a global basis.
And when Neuhaus spoke on this at the 1997 Synod of Bishops, urging that the Americas be evangelized by "evangelicals and Catholics together," the Pope gave him a friendly wave from the dais.

Time's Man of the Year: Pope John Paul II
Time's Man of the Year: Pope John Paul II Time's Man of the Year: Pope John Paul II While there is much about Roman Catholic theology from which evangelicals must dissent, it could be argued that the orthodoxy, christology and moral Law ethic of the Catholic Church is the historic foundation of Protestantism.
It could also be argued that the current Pope has done more to halt the spread of atheistic communism and abortion in the world than any other man in modern history.
Ironically, it was for his moral example (and Time's liberal prejudice against Newt Gingrich) that Pope John Paul II won the "Man of the Year" cover (December 26, 1994/January 2, 1995).
